Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers (ACET)
Program
Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools have joined together in partnership to offer an innovative teacher preparation program for accomplished talented individuals who wish to become teachers in MCPS secondary schools.
This program is designed for Maryland teacher shortage fields at the middle and high school levels. The teaching fields for the next ACET Institute and Internship are Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish, and Technology Education.
Potential teacher candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 credits earned in the certification field. If your degree is from a foreign institution outside the U.S., you must submit an evaluation of it from one of the MSDE-approved agencies.
The ACET Institute in January to mid March uses blended instruction (online and face-to-face) for a cohort of 15-20 candidates. A strong support system with MC and MCPS faculty throughout the Internship in April and May benefits candidates' transition into teaching. Following a successful internship, candidates are placed in MCPS secondary classrooms for one year on a Resident Teaching Certificate, while they complete the remaining requirements for a Maryland Standard Professional I Certificate.
Information sessions are held periodically at all three Montgomery College campus locations. Each session will include a presentation on the purpose of the program, participant qualifications, classes and program requirements, and the interview schedule, and the time line for each component of the program. A discussion of the application materials and time for questions and answers will also be included in each one-hour session.
ACET is a Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Program. See Maryland State Department of Education for more information.
