ACET Teaching Institute, Schedule of Classes

The Instructional Component

  • Is composed of seven modules aligned with the InTASC standards:
    • Human Development
    • Learning Theories
    • Secondary Methods
    • Secondary Assessments
    • Diversity
    • Students with Exceptionalities
    • Collaboration and Communication
  • Includes performance based activities, development, planning, and delivery of instruction
  • Meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays January through March
  • Includes enrollment in RD238, Methods of Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Part 1 -  (if not previously completed)
  • Utilizes blended instruction including face to face and distance learning
  • Includes a one-week break before the Internship begins

Internship

  • Is comprised of five weeks unpaid experience in an MCPS secondary classroom
  • Includes initial observation of cooperating teacher, followed quickly by daily teaching with supervision
  • Frequent observation and feedback from MC School of Education faculty

Residency

  • Follows successful completion of internship
  • Candidates interview for vacancies in MCPS and are placed in paid positions in the fall
  • Following placement, intensive mentoring and cohort seminars to provide strong support
  • Requires successful completion of Praxis II Pedagogy exam and Part II of the Methods of Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content, RD239 at MC or equivalent PD course in MCPS
  • Following successful residency, candidates are awarded the MSDE Standard Professional Certificate I
