ACET Teaching Institute, Schedule of Classes
The Instructional Component
- Is composed of seven modules aligned with the InTASC standards:
- Human Development
- Learning Theories
- Secondary Methods
- Secondary Assessments
- Diversity
- Students with Exceptionalities
- Collaboration and Communication
- Includes performance based activities, development, planning, and delivery of instruction
- Meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays January through March
- Includes enrollment in RD238, Methods of Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Part 1 - (if not previously completed)
- Utilizes blended instruction including face to face and distance learning
- Includes a one-week break before the Internship begins
Internship
- Is comprised of five weeks unpaid experience in an MCPS secondary classroom
- Includes initial observation of cooperating teacher, followed quickly by
daily teaching with supervision
- Frequent observation and feedback from MC School of Education faculty
Residency
- Follows successful completion of internship
- Candidates interview for vacancies in MCPS and are placed in paid positions in the fall
- Following placement, intensive mentoring and cohort seminars to provide strong support
- Requires successful completion of Praxis II Pedagogy exam and Part II of the Methods of Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content, RD239 at MC or equivalent PD course in MCPS
- Following successful residency, candidates are awarded the MSDE Standard Professional Certificate I
