TARGETED ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The TAP Program provides short-term Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) training services to legal refugees/asylees in the Montgomery and Prince George’s counties that are intended to lead to employment within a year. VESL classes emphasize the listening, speaking, reading, writing skills necessary for successful entry into the workforce or other vocational programs. Students learn career-specific terminology and develop the intercultural competence needed for successful interaction in American society.

Courses include authentic experiences in English and in the American workforce through service learning, field trips, and a task-based approach to second language instruction. The fact that refugee/asylee students are under great pressure to become self-sufficient compels a highly-practical, life/job-skills focused approach to curriculum and instruction at the Refugee Center. Students’ English language proficiency levels are assessed and they are placed into VESL courses based on this assessment. Current courses offered through the TAP program are as follows:

  • women taking classesESOL for Hotel Careers
  • ESOL for Computers (including Word, Excel & QuickBooks)
  • ESOL for Office Jobs
  • Workstyles
  • ESOL for Food Service
  • ESOL for Customer Service
  • Pronunciation

*Through the TAP program students may also take a Certified Nursing Assistant course.

The TAP program is open to refugees and political asylees, parolees from Haiti and Cuba, and holders of Special Immigrant Visas (SIV's) and T-Visas residing in Prince George's and Montgomery counties only. Students must bring proof of refugee or asylee status. Caseworkers may register clients for classes by completing the online form, or by sending the client to the RTC main office located at Montgomery College, The Cafritz Arts Center, room 230, 930 King Street, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. Clients must be registered for classes in advance.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT CLASS
The CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program consists of 110 hours of classroom time and 42 hours of supervised work in a nursing home. It generally lasts three to four months and prepares students to pass the Maryland Board of Nursing GNA (Geriatric Nursing Assistant) examination.
This program is open to refugees and political asylees who pass an entrance exam. Students must bring proof of refugee or asylee status. Caseworkers may register clients for the CNA placement examination online, by phone, or by sending the client to the RTC main office.
