Parental Involvement is the Real Cornerstone of Rookie Driver Safety

Driver Ed Classroom Montgomery College's Driver Education course is approved by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. The course consists of the required 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours Behind the Wheel. Our classroom includes learner-centered instruction and is limited to 25 students per course; Behind the Wheel is one on one instruction with a certified driving Instructor. Successful completion of this driver education course is one of the requirements for obtaining a Maryland driver's license. Courses are held in Gaithersburg or Takoma Park/Silver Spring. The cost for the Driver Education course is $325.00; non-Maryland residents add $160.00.

Effective October 2008, students must have a Learner's Permit to take this course.

Driver Improvement Lessons: Need more EXPERIENCE behind the wheel? Driver Improvement Lessons, with a certified driving instructor, are designed to improve driving skills and give young drivers more experience behind the wheel. Even after passing driver education or getting a driver's license, many young drivers lack EXPERIENCE behind the wheel. Our certified driving Instructors are there to help young drivers improve their driving skills, gain more experience behind the wheel, and reduce their risk on the road. See DIL application for more information.

Parents: What can you do to assist your Rookie Driver?

Parental Involvement is the Real Cornerstone of Rookie Driver Safety. Setting a good example is one of the most important things a parent can do to prepare their Rookie Driver. A lot of parents are telling their Rookie driver the correct thing to do, but when they drive they don't necessarily do the correct thing. So the kids are confused. How are they supposed to drive, like their parents or their Driver Ed Instructor? Students need at least 60 hours of driving practice with an adult before they can try for their license. Take advantage of those hours to work with your child to practice driver safety. And for the parent who feels their child is not really ready, consider a few hours of Driver Improvement Lessons with a certified driving instructor.

Driver Ed Classroom

What do the students say?

In the news:Licensed and finding more freedom in the driver's seat an article in the Gazette, August 8, 2007.

  • It was very helpful. I learned a lot and the method of teaching was very innovative. The slides for every unit and the Jeopardy games helped us remember a lot of important pointers for new drivers. Definitely better than a straight lecture.
  • It isn't even boring and you learn a lot.
  • You learn all the basics of the road in a fun way.
  • Many of my friends said that their Driver Ed class was So Boring. I had fun with this class, and I would like other people to have the same experience. Also, the instructor was so good about involving us (a deaf student).
  • More activities for different learning styles. Best experience in a classroom in a while.
  • It's fun and it doesn't bore you to death like the other Driver's Ed schools.
  • I would recommend this course to a friend because I feel that our instructor makes us feel confident that we can do it.
  • Good price for great instruction, the classrooms have nice chairs and mobile tables. The instruction style is very engaging. He has a schedule on the board, he integrates personal stories and teaching and we always receive unit packets.
