Event Management Internship Program (EMIP)

The Event Management Internship Program (EMIP), will bridge education with experience for employment or entrepreneurship as Event Management professionals. Designed to benefit the local hospitality industry with excellent talent, the EMIP will also contribute new business owners to the economy and reward Montgomery College students for their investment in Montgomery College. Students will engage in three learning mediums beyond classroom study: Internship, Coaching and Professional Development.
INTERNSHIP: Internship assignments will be non-paid (transportation stipend provided) and last for approximately two months. Placements will be made by the EMIP Coach and Hospitality Program Director. Specific internship expectations will be communicated and managed by the Internship Partner. Internship partners will primarily be Montgomery County businesses, hotels, organizations and entertainment venues.
COACHING: Coaching will be used to support students throughout the internship experience. Students will receive 8 hours of one on one coaching plus 2 group coaching sessions with other participants. Students will learn how to evaluate the risks associated with events and incorporate troubleshooting strategies and contingency plans.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Students will leave this program prepared for the Event Management profession. Interns will receive an IDP (Individual Development Plan) prepared by the EMIP Coach with input from the Internship Partner along with an updated resume or BIO. In addition, Interns will gain the knowledge necessary for new business start up provided by our BEST (Business Entrepreneur Success Training) program. Participants will enter the Hospitality Industry with a wealth of experience and knowledge for employment or entrepreneurship as Event Management Professionals.
PREREQUISITES:
Students must have engaged in classroom study of event management principles and practices like budget and project management for planning, executing and closure of events. As proof of this experience, students must have completed any of the following prerequisites:
- Event Management & Marketing course plus Case Study provided by Montgomery College WD&CE’s Hospitality Program
- Meeting and Conference Operations course, provided by Montgomery College’s Hotel Management Program
- Event and Tourism Management, provided by George Washington University’s School of Business
- Other comparable course of study can be considered
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The EMIP requires an admittance process which includes: (1) WDCE Registration for EMIP HOS-026 and (2) Application to verify prerequisites and suitability for placement. Full Refunds will be granted if unable to place student in an internship.
The EMIP is a four month program:
- Month One: Group orientation to welcome participants and communicate expectations
- Months Two and Three: Internship and Coaching sessions
- Month Four: Professional Development
