Nonprofit Leadership Institute

The success of nonprofit organizations is essential to the quality of life and economic development in Montgomery County. Given dramatic changes in the nonprofit sector as a whole, today's nonprofit urgently needs new and talented leadership at all levels of the organization. To help ensure the continued success of our nonprofits, Montgomery College is sponsoring the Nonprofit Leadership Institute. This special program lasts five days, with three meeting dates in January, one in March, and the final meeting in May, (January 27 - 29, March 25, and May 27, 2009). In addition there is an orientation dinner on January 26, 2009 and applied work in between sessions. We are now enrolling a limited number of emerging nonprofit leaders. "Emerging leaders” include new executive directors, program directors, and administrators moving into executive roles, outstanding staff, volunteers, or board members who want to be more effective leaders.

Designed to challenge and to cultivate the skills of emerging leaders, this multi-day, intensive, interactive program will apply the best research and resources for the next generation of managers and directors .Learning opportunities as part of the Institute include: five days of informative and practical training; development of a personal action plan; participation on a team to support taking action; individual coaching, extensive printed resources; and more.

Participants in the program will:

  • gain an overview of what it takes to be an effective nonprofit leader;
  • increase self-awareness and enhance their leadership strengths and skills.
  • learn about key issues affecting the nonprofit sector;
  • increase their personal influence and learn how to lead change;
  • improve their cultural competence to work with diverse constituencies;
  • learn practical tips and tools for working with groups and teams;
  • practice effective communication and learn how to prevent and cope with conflict;
  • learn the importance of personal and organizational planning; and
  • learn from noted experts and develop a peer-support network.

Participants will be selected on the basis of completeness and quality of the application as well as diversity in size and mission of nonprofit organizations.

The cost for the five day program is $555.00* and includes all course materials, meals, a dinner reception and orientation on January 26, 2009, program sessions on January 27 - 29, March 25, 2009 and May 27, 2009. Please note: attendance at all sessions and completion of a personal action plan are required to receive the Certificate of Completion. Applications are due on or before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2008.

*There is an additional $250.00 out-of-state fee for participants whose personal residence is not in Maryland.
