What You Learn in the Classes

At Montgomery College, you can take classes that will help you improve the writing you do at work or help prepare you for a career in technical writing or editing.  People who already have degrees, who are earning their first degree, or who just want to write better take classes at Montgomery College.  Here are some of the classes and a bit of what you may learn:

EN 109, Writing for Technology and Business

  • how to produce types of documents common to business and industry
  • how to recognize common obstacles in communicating effectively and how to overcome them
  • how to make writing easier and more effective

EN 125, Techniques of Proofreading and Editing

  • how to perform copyediting, comprehensive editing, and proofreading
  • how to determine what type of editing is appropriate to meet a deadline
  • how to negotiate editing tasks with a writer

EN 240, Organization and Development of Technical Documents

  • how to prepare on-line documentation
  • how to collaborate with others to produce a document
  • how to budget and schedule a document
Having these skills can improve the writing you do for work and employers often evaluate a job candidate on their writing skills as much as anything else.  Asia Elsbree, Deputy Director of Professional Development for the United States Department of Agriculture, says, “In making hiring decisions over the past 20 years, I’ve learned that the candidate who demonstrates exceptional writing skills will never be satisfied with less than exceptional performance.”

John Patterson, Supervisory Training Specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture, adds that employees in his department have benefited from the technical writing curriculum at Montgomery College in several ways, such as

  • learning a practical and feasible method of writing
  • evolving from competent writers into excellent writers
  • changing from competent assistant editors into excellent assistant editors
  • learning the skills needed to write precise, clear, and readable manuals

Mr. Patterson adds that many of the employees who have taken technical writing classes at Montgomery College have won awards for their work.

Students who have taken classes in technical writing, or who have completed Montgomery College’s certificate program in technical writing work for organizations such as Visa, Raycal, Denro, Vitro, Comsat, ACECOM, the United States Government, and others.
