Buddhism states that suffering is universal. The way to end
suffering is to follow the
eightfold path. This seems like a good idea for an individual,
but what about society? How
would the Buddha solve the problem of an unjust policy or a
tyrannical dictator? Is this
philosophy (religion) directed towards reaching nirvana and
nothing more?
Buddhism adopts the position that the relationships
between people can attain a new
day of freedom if people control their cravings. In a society
where people are able to keep their
self-interest and cravings in check, peace is attainable. Where
they are unable to do so, violence
and perhaps even civil war is more likely.
