Confucius' principle of reciprocity as it applies to human
affairs is used today in Western
societies. Why isn't more of Confucianism used (that is, in
Western societies)?
A communal identity is part of the background psychology
that operates in
Confucianism. Western liberal democracies have defined themselves
in opposition to strong and
sometimes oppressive monarchies and churches. A communal identity
has largely given way to
individual identities in the mythology and philosophy of the
West, and for this reason such
virtues as filial piety are less prominent in the West than in
the East.
