Who are our students?

Characteristics of "Millennial" or "Net Generation" students*:

  • Born early 80's to mid-90's
  • Have lots of gadgets
  • Like to multi-task--absorbtion?
  • Like to control what, when, and how they learn
  • Non-tradtional learners
    • Delayed enrollment
    • Attend part-time
    • Work full-time
    • Have dependents
  • Like to learn by doing
  • Take technology for granted
    • Playing with gizmos is second nature
    • Frustrated by technology that tethers them to a specific location
      • Listen to a lecture at the gym--mix work and play
      • Could listen to or watch another instructor's lecture if it was more clear
  • Prefer video, audio, and interactive media
  • Smart but impatient--expect results immediately
    • Want to learn as fast as possible with the least hassle
  • Like multimedia--text, video, audio--same as a lecture--see and listen to instructor; write on board--already multi-sensory
