What is MathXL?

MathXL is an online supplement to the text that provides homework, tutorial, and assessment tools for students. The questions are picked by the instructor and are randomized to discourage student collaboration. Student accounts carry to any computer that has an internet connection and the MathXL plug-ins installed. [Back to top]

How will MathXL be used in this course?

Most homework will be administered using MathXL. Homework is due on Sundays by 11:55pm Eastern time.  [Back to top]

How do I get registered?

If you purchased a new book from the college bookstore, then you should have received a folder that contains a code.

If your book is used, you may buy a code online at www.mathxl.com. The student has two options -- 12 months access and 24 months access.

If you have used MathXL in a previous course and your account is still active, you may use your old username/password without charge for this course. It will be necessary to sign up for the instructor’s course for this semester by following the “My Courses” link.

Call technical support at 1-800-677-6337. They can usually correct your problem quickly. Alternatively, visit www.MathXL.com/support.         [Back to top]

My MathXL package contains an access code, but no software disk. Isn’t there software I have to load?

No. Once you log on the MathXL, register, and select your class, you will need to run the Installation Wizard which will prompt you to install the required plug-ins and players to run MathXL (MathXL player, Quicktime, Adobe Reader, etc.) You do not need a disk. [Back to top]

Tips for making MathXL work on your computer:

- In addition to Internet Explorer, the new Flash-based MathXL Player v2 will support Firefox on Windows (XP and Vista) and Safari and Firefox on the Macintosh. MathXL will not work correctly using the AOL browser. If you use AOL for your internet service, connect to the internet using AOL, then minimize AOL and use Internet Explorer as your browser. Then go to www.MathXL.com

- Make sure that you have enabled ActiveX and disabled popup blockers.

- Installers for MathXL software appear as yellow banners across the top of the Internet Explorer 6 or 7 window.

- The student is welcome to bring a laptop to the instructor’s office for assistance in diagnosing and resolving technical issues.

- The computers in the college’s Math/Science Center have MathXL preinstalled and need only your username and password. [Back to top]

I missed the due date because…

Assignments are given well in advance so that students may prepare in case of a situation. If a technical difficulty occurs, students may want to consider the use of a computer in the Math/Science Center. The student is reminded that two MathXL grades will be dropped at the end of the semester to allow a reasonable accommodation due to technical or “life issues.”  [Back to top]
