Fall 2001 Semester

Janet Merrick, Counselor, Disability Support Services - Rockville

Project Goals:

  1. To enhance the DSS and Student Development web sites to include more information for new students and a Student Guide for students with disabilities, focusing on improving College access to all new students. All enhancements will be accessible to people with disabilities.

The DSS website at: http://www.montgomerycollege.org/Departments/dispsvc/ now has a "Student Guide" link from its home page. Navigation is improved and all site enhancements are accessible to people using assistive technology. Components of the "Student Guide" include:
    • Role of DSS
    • Services provided
    • Eligibility for services
    • Applying to the College
    • Applying to DSS (Intake Packet forms available in .doc and .pdf formats)
    • Requesting and Arranging for DSS Services - a "How to" guide for students including forms
    • Guidelines for documenting disability
    • College Access Program
    • Financial aid, scholarship and Social Security Tuition Waiver information
    • How to Contact DSS - "Who's who" and where to find us
    • Rights and responsibilities - of students with disabilities and of the College
    • Grievance policy - how to file a complaint

The Rockville Campus Student Development site is available at: http://www.montgomerycollege.org/Departments/studevrv. The major enhancements include:
    • Improved navigation through the use of "breadcrumbs" menus designed to allow students to know where they are and how to return to any location on this sizeable site.
    • Assessment Center information on academic and assessment/placement testing.
      • Student and faculty guides to using the Rockville Assessment Center for academic testing
      • Who must take assessment tests?
      • Scheduling and retaking assessment tests (all campuses)
      • Frequently asked questions about the Accuplacer and Michigan
      • Sample Accuplacer and Michigan test questions
      • Interpreting the Accuplacer results (including form)
      • Advanced Placement and Credit by Examination
    • Addition of several frequently used forms:
      • Dean's office: permission to take course overload, reinstatement/suspension appeal and recommendation requests for transferring students
      • Advisors: assessment score interpretation, referral for assessment re-testing, Academic Appeal, General Education Appeal, General Studies graduation checklist and course planning sheet
    • Advising information for new and returning students, also:
      • Academic advisors by department at Rockville and links to Germantown and Takoma Park advisors
      • "Frequently Asked Questions" about advising and transfer for students.
    • Updated Career and Transfer information and internet resources
    • I-20 information for international students
    • Improved "Events" section for announcements of Student Development programs
  2. To offer presentations and one-on-one assistance to faculty/staff/administrators who wish to incorporate accessible web design into their web sites. To further develop a website and resources for faculty to use to incorporate accessible principles into their course materials.

"Designing Your Website for Accessibility," designed with Karen Penn de Martinez, CA Department - Rockville, can be used for presentations on designing for accessibility and as a resource for faculty to give to students for additional information. I presented two workshops through the CTL to faculty/staff this fall, one at Takoma Park with Karen Penn de Martinez and another at the Rockville Campus. I also used the site to present to a CA273 class at the Rockville Campus. It is available at: http://www.montgomerycollege.org/Departments/dispsvc/universal_design-lec3.html. This site includes:

    • Why Accessibility? - Legal mandates and sources of assistance
    • Designing for accessibility is good page design
      • Sample "Disaster Page" - what NOT to do in designing webpages; can be used with students as an in-class exercise
      • Using good general design principles, graphics, links - includes links to examples of how to implement
    • Advanced Topics - Navigation, frames, image maps, site maps, tables, providing alternatives, and more
    • Test your web pages for Accessibility - Accessibility checkers and links to free demo assistive software
    • Resources for more information on accessibility
