CHAPTER 10

THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Review the section “Naming Skeletal Muscles”.  Although you will not be tested directly on this section, reading it will simplify your learning of muscle names and actions.

1.      Describe the attachments and main function of the rotator cuff muscles.  You will not be asked to name individual rotator cuff muscles.

2.      Identify all muscles listed on pages two through six of this packet.

3.      Describe the action of all muscles listed on pages two through six of this packet.

4.      State the origin and insertion of the following muscles as given on pages two through six of this packet:

zygomaticus major                            flexor carpi radialis

masseter                                         psoas major

sternocleidomastoid                           gluteus maximus

pectoralis major                                gluteus medius

deltoid                                            semimembranosus

biceps brachii                                   rectus femoris

pronator teres                                  gastrocnemius

5.      Identify the location of following structures on a live body:

sternocleidomastoid                           tendon of extensor digitorum

pectoralis major                                gluteus maximus

deltoid                                            hamstrings

biceps brachii                                   quadriceps femoris

triceps brachii                                  tibialis anterior

tendon of flexor carpi radialis              gastrocnemius

6.      Identify the following muscles in the body builder photographs available during lab:

     trapezius

serratus anterior

pectoralis major

teres major

latissimus dorsi

deltoid

external oblique

rectus abdominis

biceps brachii

gluteus maximus

     gracilis

     sartorius

     rectus femoris

     vastus lateralis

     vastus medialis

     gastrocnemius

     sternocleidomastoid

     hamstrings

     triceps brachii
