CHAPTER 5

THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

1.      List the five components of the integumentary system.

2.      Name the two regions of skin.

3.      State the relative location within the integumentary system, tissue type, and

 function of the superficial fascia.

4.      State the tissue type and relative location within the integumentary system of the epidermis.  State the function of keratinocytes and keratin, and melanocytes and melanin.

5.      State the function of the stratum basale and stratum corneum.

6.      State the relative location within the integumentary system, tissue type, and function of the dermis.  State the function of the epidermal ridges.  Define lines of cleavage and state their surgical significance.  Define blister.

7.      Define freckles and cyanosis.

8.      Name the secretion of the sudoriferous glands and the function of that secretion.  You will not be asked to differentiate between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands.

9.      Name the secretion of the sebaceous glands and the function of that secretion.

10.    State the functions of hair, a hair follicle's matrix and papilla, and arrector pili muscles.

11.    State of what nails are a modification.

12.    State the functions of the integumentary system.

13.    Define burn.  Differentiate between first-, second-, and third-degree burns with regard to extent of tissue damage and symptoms.  See lab illustration for further clarification.

14.    State the most crucial risk factor (most common cause) for skin cancer.  Name and briefly describe the most common type of skin cancer, and the most deadly type.

15.    Describe the changes that occur in the skin of the elderly.  You will not be tested on aging's influence on our hair.

16.    Describe the mechanism of skin wound repair using the attached lecture notes.

17.    With the aid of one of our lab models differentiate among the skin of your scalp, your armpit, and the sole of your foot.

18.    Identify the following:

          superficial fascia (hypodermis)

          dermis

          epidermis

              stratum basale

              stratum  corneum

          hair

              shaft

              root

              follicle

                   bulb

                        papilla

                        matrix

          arrector pili muscle

          sudoriferous glands

          sebaceous glands
