Books:  Finding Books in the Library Catalog

Books on art and artists are in the "N" section of the library.  There are two sections to check: the regular Germantown Circulating Collection and the Germantown Folio Collection (Folio just means that the book is larger and generally will have better plates/pictures because of the larger format).  E-books on Art that can be found in the MC Library Catalog as well.  When searching the Catalog you can use the Set One Limit menu to search on just the Germantown or the E-Book collection.  E-books can be accessed from anywhere including home and work.

For example, the call number ND covers painting and painters, and is further broken down by nationality.  ND237 is American, ND553 is French, etc.

Sample search for the artist Edward Hopper to find his artwork/books about him, would be to do a "Subject Contains" search on -  Edward, Hopper

Artist Bios:  Finding Biographical Information about a particular Artist
  • Grove Art Online This database contains Biographies of Artists and Bibliographies of works by and about Artists.
  • Biography Resource Center.  This database contains biographies of people in all fields, and may not include those who are only known as historians or authors.  This database is good for finding authors whose primary field is not history.
  • Encyclopedia of World Biography.  This database is good for finding people who may not be covered in databases that focus on Americans or the English-speaking world.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library.  This database covers over 300 reference titles, many of which focus on Art, History, and Biography.

Works of art can be found either using the MC Library Catalog to find books about the artist as described above, or using the ARTstor database .

ARTStor covers nearly a million images of artists works in every medium and genre.

Journal Articles

Journal, magazine and newspaper databases can be good sources for reviews of an artists catalog or exhibitions of the artists work.

For instance, here is a sample search from Academic Search Premiere on the artist, David Hockney, many of the articles offer critical reviews of his work and style.  The National Newspapers database might also have similar types of articles since it covers the New York Times which often reviews artists works.  Here is another sample search from this database on the American artist, Edward Hopper.

Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person without giving them credit.  This makes it appear that you are presenting the words or ideas as your own.  To avoid plagiarism, always cite the source where you found your information.  If you are unsure about what plagiarism is and how to avoid it, you can take the library's self-guided tutorial, Plagiarism:  What it is and how to avoid it

If you are unsure about the correct citation form for your books, databases, and journal articles, the library has free packets giving examples in both of the standards formats, MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association).  We also have handouts for students on the Library Web page.
