Databases: Finding company
information in the MC Library databases
Remember that all of the library's resources can be accessed
from home, work, or anywhere there is an internet connection. When off
campus you will need to provide your student number (M#) to authenticate you are
a student. Once you have put your # in,you can move from resource to
resource without providing the number again.
-
Mergent Online.
This databases will provide exhaustive company and industry information.
Look for the "enter Mergent online" button on left side.

-
Hoover's. This database
also contains complete company and industry information.
Mergent's or Hoover's - What's the difference:
Both show roughly the same information, they simply have different interfaces and search mechanisms. Mergent's presents a more
thorough look at the financials of companies and is easier to search.
Additional sources include recent news articles from the business press. Hoover's company overviews may be presented in a more readable format
and Hoover's format makes it easier to do company comparisons from one company
to another. Both will give you most of the information for your assignment
so its mostly just a matter of personal preference.

-
Business Source Premier - Company reports are available for most of
the companies for this assignment. From the Basic Search screen
the third link from the left at the top is "Company Reports". This
takes you to a very easy alphabetic search for the company name.
Simply type in "Honda" to find "Honda Motors" for example.
-
National Newspapers - This database covers both the Wall Street
Journal and The New York Times so if you want or need even further
information on your company or want to review recent news about your
company or industry this would be a good source for that.
Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person without giving
them credit. This makes it appear that you are presenting the words or
ideas as your own. To avoid plagiarism, always cite the source where you
found your information. If you are unsure about what plagiarism is and how
to avoid it, you can take the library's self-guided tutorial,
Plagiarism: What it is and how to avoid it.
If you are unsure about the correct citation form for your books, databases,
and journal articles, the library has free packets giving examples in both of
the standards formats, MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American
Psychological Association). We also have
handouts for
students on the Library Web page.
