College Policies and Student Code of Conduct:
Students should refer to the current Montgomery College Student
Handbook for the official wording of all academic, classroom, and
college-wide policies. Students are expected to abide by the Code of
Conduct which follows:
Each and every student is expected to behave in ways which
promote a teaching and learning atmosphere. Students have
the right to learn; however, they do not have the right to
interfere with the freedom of the faculty to teach or the rights
of other students to learn. Students will be treated
respectfully in return for respectful behavior.
All in-class discussions should be carried out in a way that
keeps the classroom environment respectful of the rights of
others. This means that, for example, students should not
interrupt someone else who is talking regardless of whether
that person is the instructor or another student. Students
should not monopolize class time by repeatedly interrupting
and asking questions in a manner which hinders the learning
process of others. Students are also expected to conduct
themselves in ways which create a safe learning and teaching
environment that is free from such things as violence,
intimidation, and harassment.
Please make sure that you obtain and read a copy of the current Student
Handbook, which contains the Student Code of Conduct.
Auditing Class: The student must complete all assignments and tests. If the student does
not complete all assigned work, the instructor may assign a final grade of W.
Class Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings; in order to accommodate sickness and other unavoidable circumstances, students may be absent without an excuse from class for a total of 2 meetings (1 week). Absences beyond this must be discussed with the professor and may result in the student being dropped from the course or receiving a grade of ‘F’.
Coming to class more than 20 minutes late will result in the loss of half a day’s attendance.
Course Evaluation and Grading Scale:
6 paragraph length assignments 50 pts ea 300 pts
3 grammar tests 50 pts ea 150 pts
Writing Center Assignments 25 pts
Journal 25 pts
Department Final exam 200 pts
TOTAL 700 pts
Department Final Exam (Students must pass the Department Final Exam with a minimum of ‘C’ in the essay and 70% in the Grammar section).
Late assignments: Assignments turned in later than the due date without prior arrangement will be penalized; those turned in one class period late will receive one grade lower than their worth; those turned in later than that will receive a maximum grade of ‘C’.
Revised Assignments: Since revision is a process of learning, students are expected to revise graded assignments for content and grammar. The final grade for the paragraph will be the avrage of the first grade and the revision grade for the paragraph. Revisions must be turned in no later than two class periods after they are first returned to students.
Student Disability:If you have a disability which will require accommodation, please see the
instructor after class or during office hours. It is usually possible to work out whatever arrangements are necessary, be it special seating, testing, or other accommodation. If you have not already contacted the Disability
Support Services office (CAB231), please do so to obtain a letter authorizing your accommodations.
Students with mobility disabilities depend on the elevators to get to class. Please use the stairs if you are able to do so.
Labs: You are required to complete the EL103 Writing Center exercises. Each exercise must be checked and initialed by a tutor in the Writing Center. Be ready to turn in the checked exercises on the dates below. NOTE: You may check no more than two exercises per week in the Writing Center.
