Before coming to Montgomery College full-time
in 1995, I worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through consulting
firms. I was employed as a health information specialist, researching and
sharing information with the general public, patients, and medical professionals
first for the National Cancer Institute and then for the Institute on Deafness
and Other Communication Disorders. Prior to my experiences with NIH, I taught
for seventeen years in public schools in Maryland, specializing in language arts
(phonics, spelling, reading, and writing). Supervision of student teachers and
teacher training were included in my job responsibilities.
Several hours each week are devoted to
exercise, such as walking and biking. I enjoy spending time with
music, either listening to it (Debussy and other French Impressionists are among
my favorite composers) or playing the piano (not an entertainer, but can keep
myself amused). As a reading professor, I also spend time reading for pleasure,
and particularly enjoy biographies, autobiographies, and contemporary fiction.
Having lived my entire life in the Washington, D.C. area, I feel especially
fortunate to have easy access to the many museums, art galleries, and historical
sites in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Students, staff members, and faculty come to Montgomery College with a wide variety of experiences and religious, ethnic, economic, and language backgrounds. It is this variety that makes MC an enriching institution. In the classroom, it is my responsibility to ensure that these differences are celebrated and that students and their opinions are treated with respect. I strive to make my classroom an inviting place that students look forward to entering. My task is to provide information and guidance to students, and to challenge them to perform at optimum levels.
NOTE: The RD 101, RD 102, and RD 103 courses are for international students who are improving their skills in English. See the American English Language Program (AELP) for more information.
Courses That I Teach
Teaching assignments vary from semester to semester in the Department of
Reading, American English Language, World Languages, and
Philosophy. Please note that RD 239, which is a certification course for secondary teachers in Maryland, is offered through Distance
Learning at Montgomery College. RD
120 is a 3-credit course that is transferable to some Maryland
colleges. Check the Catalog
Descriptions for course specifics and the Class Schedule for
information on times, dates, locations, and professors for the all reading
courses.
