1. IMAGES

All of the images at these sites are, except where noted, copyright free.

ARTstor
This is an image collection to which the library subscribes. You may download anything you find here without fear of violating copyright. Click LAUNCH button on right to search for images.
The Washington Post: Historical Collection, 1877-1990
Enter "editorial cartoon" as part of your search expression. Limit by date range on opening page, if desired.
Semple: Digitized Images, Manuscripts, Books, Ephemera
Each of these links will take you to collections of images and text that can be used without fear of violating copyright.
Semple: Art & Artists
User, Beware! These sources are not free of copyright; you may link to the pages, but you may not copy the image onto your hard drive.

2. ARTICLES IN DATABASES

Here are a few good places to start your search for journal articles:

Academic Search Premier
Simply enter your search expression in the Find field; results can be sorted afterwards.
Expanded Academic ASAP
To generate a list that is ordered by Relevance, not Date, you will have to select Relevance Search before entering you search expression.
Project MUSE
Excellent coverage of all the humanities.
CQ Researcher
Less is more; search on single word or short phrase for 30-page reports.
National Newspapers
Full text of New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Baltimore Sun.
Opposing Viewpoints
Use blue Subject Headings on opening page to search by topic. Can also be searched using Boolean search expressions; select "Search By Keyword."
SIRS Knowledge Source
Change radio button to Keyword/Natural Language before entering your search expression.

Results can be sorted by date or relevance. To print, use the button within the database.

Here are some sample searches using keywords and Boolean operators:

violence AND (television OR tv)
pollution AND (water OR ocean OR marine)
ms13
dada OR dadaism
women AND "minimum wage"
"self image" AND (commercials OR advertisements OR ads)
(gender OR race) AND stereotypes

3. BOOKS

MC Library Catalog: Change the search engine setting to "Keyword Boolean" and create a search expression that consists of keywords (tend to be nouns), the Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), and punctuation (parenthesis used with OR, quotations marks for phrases):

encyclopedia AND (environment OR pollution)
gangs
(campaign OR election) AND (financing OR donations)

REMINDERS: (1) Remember that less is more when looking for books (using fewer keywords will yield more results) and (2) Subject Headings are assigned by librarians and are therefore often very helpful (look within Brief Record).

Request Book From Another Campus: Go into MC Library Catalog and use the REQUEST ITEM button at the top of the page.
   
Renew Books Online: Go into MC Library Catalog and use the MY ACCOUNT button at the top of the page.

Limit Domains in Google: To limit your Google search to reputable Web sites, enter the domain you are interested in searching in front of your search terms.
