As we discussed in the library instruction session, here are some reminders about how to locate the articles and Web sites you will need for your research. Should you have any trouble in the weeks ahead, send me an e-mail (pat.semple@montgomerycollege.edu) and I will do my best to reply within 24 hours.
Search Expressions: Here are some sample searches using keywords and Boolean operators:
- (army OR military OR "armed forces") AND marriage
- autism AND treatment
- ipod AND marketing
- ("racial profiling" OR racism) AND police
- ("eating disorder" OR bulimia OR anorexia) AND treatment
- "lung cancer" AND detection
- "jay z" AND biography
- (homeless OR homelessness) AND criminalization
- litvinenko AND radiation
- SIRS Knowledge Source (all topics)
- (1) Scroll through list of Leading Issues, or (2) enter your search expression up at the top and select "Keyword/Natural Language." Results from either option can be sorted by Lexile Score; a rating in the 800-1200 range is the average for a 12th grade student in an American high school.
- National Newspapers (all topics)
- Enter search expression into Basic Search field.
- Academic Search Premier (all topics)
- Enter search expression in "Find" field and put checkmark in "Full Text" box. Results can be limited to Magazines or Newspapers from the bar at the top.
- Expanded Academic ASAP (all topics)
- Notice that the articles in your results list is broken down by type -- academic journal articles, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and so forth.
- Health Source: Consumer Edition (autism, eating disorders, lung cancer)
- Put a check mark in the "full text" box and enter search expression.
- Military & Government Collection (military marriages)
- Put a check mark in the "full text" box and enter search expression.
- Business Source Premier (ipod, smart car, box store)
- Put a check mark in the "full text" box and enter search expression.
Sorting Results and Printing: Results can be sorted by date or relevance. To print, use the button within the database.

- Gale Virtual Reference Library
- Put keywords in Search box or go to list of subject areas to drill down and find your information.
- Encyclopedia Britannica
- A general encyclopedia. Enter keyword or phrase.
- xreferplus
- Use the Directory to drill down and find your information.
