Searching By Topic: Go into MC Library Catalog. Change the search engine setting to "Keyword Boolean" and create a search expression that consists of keywords (tend to be nouns), the Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), and punctuation (parenthesis used with OR, quotations marks for phrases):

Searching: The collections below are enormous databases of citations, abstracts, and often the full text of articles that originally appeared in scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers. To search for an article, use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), keywords (tend to be nouns), and punctuation (quotation marks for phrases, parentheses for OR). For example:

- "minimum wage" AND (poverty OR poor)
- "self-image" AND (ads OR advertisements OR commercials)

- Full text articles from 5,000+ scholarly publications, indexing and abstracts for 3,500 peer-reviewed publications. Covers all subject areas.
- Expanded Academic ASAP
- Indexes over 3,500 titles; 2,000+ are full text. Covers all subject areas.
- National Newspapers
- Full text of New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Baltimore Sun.
- CQ Researcher
- In-depth analysis of social issues.
- CQ Weekly
- Weekly overview of legislation before the House and Senate.
- Ethnic NewsWatch
- Set the "Ethnic Group" option to limit your search to publications that have identified themselves as representing the point of view of a minority group.
- Opposing Viewpoints
- Use the directory on the opening page to locate information on current topics and controversial issues. Use tabs to access opinionated essays (Viewpoint Essays), statistics, primary documents, links to Web sites, and articles.
- SIRS Knowledge Source
- Full-text articles exploring social, scientific, health, historic, economic, business, political and global issues.
Sorting: Results can be sorted by date (most recent first) or relevance (highest occurrence of keywords).
Printing: Use the Print button in the database, not the Print icon or menu option in the browser.

Comprehensive Listing of Social Science Journals at the Montgomery College Libraries
Most of the Web sites listed below are gateway sites. Each site has gathered together links to many other Web sites that contain documents on specific topics in the field of sociology.
- Allyn & Bacon Sociology Links
- A Web site maintained by a publisher of college textbooks. Arranged by subject areas such as drugs, violence, and family, which lead you to Web documents.
- Sociological Tour Through Cyberspace
- A listing of Web sites in sociology; maintained by a sociology professor at Trinity University.
- Research Resources for the Social Sciences
- Click on sociology/anthropology for a long list of Web sites. Maintained by McGraw Hill Ryerson, another publisher of college textbooks.
- dmoz: Open Directory Project: Sociology
- User, beware: This site is like a wiki in that anyone can post links to it. Provides a wealth of links to sociology topics, journals, professional associations, etc.
- Social Sciences Information Gateway
- This British Web site allows the user to search within sociology topics such as politics, social welfare, and statistics.
