At the Reserves (Circulation) DeskAny item that you require your students to use can be placed on reserve in the Library including:
Although we make every effort to maintain close control over reserve materials, including personal copies, we cannot be liable for damaged or lost items.
- textbooks,
- copies of articles,
- audiotapes,
- videotapes,
- copies of past tests,
- sample student papers, and
- items from your personal library.
Starting with the Fall 2006 semester, the library is pleased to offer an online system that moves much of the process as well as the content itself into the digital environment. For general information about course reserves, visit our Course Reserves & E-Reserves page. For direct access, go to MC Library Course Reserves.
If you would like to talk to a member of the library staff in person about putting items on reserve, please contact Ruby Haider at 240-567-7124 or send her an e-mail at ruby.haider@montgomerycollege.edu.
Interlibrary loan is the borrowing and lending of materials between libraries and is done by a librarians at the request of an instructor. You will need to know the author, title, and publication date of the item.
Although every attempt is made to obtain material free of charge, there may be a fee charged by the lending library. If you would like to arrange for an interlibrary loan, fill out our Online Inter-Library Loan Form. If you have any questions, please call Jessica Orue at 240-567-7118 or send her an e-mail at ILL@montgomerycollege.edu.
One way to help your students research a topic is to bring the class to the Library to work on an assignment in the reference area during a class period. Students then have access to all of the materials in the Library as well as the assistance of their instructor and a librarian.
We prefer to have advance notice for in-library class sessions because it allows us to provide the best possible service to your students. To schedule an in-library class, call the Reference Desk at 240-567-7130 and speak to the reference librarian on duty.
Both faculty and students can receive individual help on a specific topic by requesting a one-on-one appointment with a reference librarian. Our work with faculty often involves creating a select bibliography of the libraries’ resources on a particular topic for a new curriculum offering, such as the recent list of primary and secondary sources on Asian American authors. Another service we provide within this framework is to review upcoming library-related assignments with regard to how recent changes in the libraries’ offerings may affect the syllabus or individual assignment. If you would like to explore this possibility, please call the Reference Desk at 240-567-7130.
The Library has 66 computers for general use by the Montgomery College community. They are intended for searching the libraries’ catalog and conducting research. We do not have word processing software on any of our computers.
One way of increasing your students' chances of success in completing research papers and other projects is to bring them in to the Library for a class period of library instruction. The librarian teaching the class will work to tailor the presentation to the students' research assignment, and the session will be held in our 32-workstation computer lab where students can have some hands-on practice.
Library instruction sessions should be scheduled at least one week, if not several weeks, in advance. The best time to bring your students to one of these sessions is when they have selected their topic and understand the nature of their assignment. To request a library instruction session, complete the Online Request Form for Library Instruction: Rockville Campus. If you have any questions, please call the Reference Desk at 240-567-7130.
[PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we cannot accommodate EN101 classes for library instruction sessions; there are too many sections and too few librarians. For this group of students, we have developed a suite of online tutorials with self-grading quizzes and optional assignments.]
We can create a resource guide for specific courses or for general subject areas. Their purpose is to help students pinpoint the resources within the library that are most useful to them as they conduct their research. The more specific the assignment, the greater the usefulness of the resource guide. Here are some examples from recent semesters:
- Business Administration & Management Classes
- EN102 Techniques of Reading & Writing II (Native American Issues), Effie Siegel
- EN109 Writing for Technology & Business (New Energy Sources), Thomas Woodall
- EN209 The Bible As Literature, Denise Folwell
- ED140 Introduction to Special Education, Zeporia Smith
- RD120 Reading & Study in College Content Areas (The Kite Runner), Ellen Mainen
Here is the listing of resource guides being used this semester: Course Related Pages.
The library offers a suite of automated online tutorials on the topics of Plagiarism, Evaluating Information From the WWW, Finding Articles, MC Library Catalog (Finding Books), MLA & APA Citation Styles, and many others. You can assign these to your students and ask them to take the 10-question quiz at the end as proof of having done so. The quizzes are automatically graded and returned to you via e-mail. If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Braham, the College's Digital Initiatives Librarian, at 240-567-8033 or brenda.braham@montgomerycollege.edu. To preview the tutorials and the quizzes, go to our MC Library Tutorials, Quizzes & Assessments page.
The Rockville Campus Library has a strong collection, and we work hard to maintain and improve it. The collection development program is based on the Montgomery College Collection Development Statement for Libraries, which provides the basis for selecting materials for the three campus libraries. Our goal is to provide materials which support the curriculum of this particular community college. Beth Thoms, at 240-567-7128 or beth.thoms@montgomerycollege.edu, is responsible for collection development.
To help us support the curriculum, keep up with changes and new programs, and acquire the most useful materials for students and faculty, the Library set up a faculty liaison program. Ms. Thoms forwards reviews of college-level books to the various department liaisons who then return them to her with their recommendations.
We ask that you let the Library know about new courses and programs, reading lists for classes, and books that you would like the Library to acquire. You may do so by either calling Ms. Thoms at the number above or by filling out our Online Book Request Form. When recommending a book, please give the library as much identifying information as possible and keep in mind that the book ordering and cataloging process usually takes a minimum of eight weeks. Requests which meet curriculum requirements or classroom needs will receive first priority.
The Library subscribes to nearly 700 print periodicals in all subject areas taught at the College, including scholarly journals, popular magazines, and newspapers. If you would like to suggest an addition or deletion to our periodicals collection, please contact Lisa Clarke at 240-567-7126 or lisa.clarke@montgomerycollege.edu.
In addition to our print subscriptions, we have the text of many important journals and newspapers available online through the libraries’ Web site on our page of Full Text Indexes & Databases.
Much of the Rockville Campus Library's video collection is located behind the Circulation Desk. Faculty may borrow these videos for classroom use, but students must treat them as reserve materials which cannot leave the Library. Students may watch them at one of the Library's many viewing stations. Videos in the circulating collection can be borrowed by anyone with a library card.
To reserve a video for classroom use, fill out a Media Reservation/Use Form at the Circulation Desk. Chi Quach at 240-567-7140 or chi.quach@montgomerycollege.edu will handle the reservation.
If you would like to recommend that the Library purchase a particular video, contact Abi Sogunro at 240-567-7114 or abi.sogunro@montgomerycollege.edu, or fill out our Online Video Request Form.
One of the ways that we advertise the Library’s holdings is to maintain timely and interesting displays. The purpose of these displays is to highlight the ways in which our holdings complement the interests or needs of our students and patrons. Recent themes for our displays have included the recent World Cup Soccer Match, career building and résumé writing, National Disability Awareness Month, and Asian-American literature. We also use the displays to promote events on campus, such as the “Books & Ideas” programs. If you have a recommendation or suggestion for a book display, please contact Abi Sogunro at 240-567-7114 or abi.sogunro@montgomerycollege.edu.
The archivist for all three campus libraries is Shelly Jablonski. She has posted information about the College Archives online, but she is also available to answer any question you may have about storing or accessing material that is significant to the history of the College. Please call her at 240-567-7174 or send an e-mail to her at shelly.jablonski@montgomerycollege.edu.
