Building MC Web Sites with Dreamweaver

Creating a New Site from the Site Menu

  1. Uploading Files from an External Disk
    1. Insert Disk in appropriate drive - A, Zip, CD-RW, or USB;
    2. Open Windows Explorer - Start > Right Click > Explore;
    3. Select External Drive in WinExpl Left Window - 1 mouse click;
    4. Select Root Folder on External Drive - e.g., "mysite"
    5. Edit > Copy or Edit > Copy to Folder
    6. Select Desktop > MyDocuments folder in WinExpl left window.
    7. Edit > Paste the Root Folder ("My Site") into MyDocuments folder on C:\\ drive.
  2. Creating a Dreamweaver Site
    1. Main Menu > Site > New Site.  The New Site Dialog Box appears.
    2. Select "Basic" Tab
    3. Site Name.  Enter Site Name (e.g., "mysite"). Use small caps, no spaces Note.  Dreamweaver will assume that the Site Name is also the name of your root folder. Although not required, it is best if the Site Name ("mysite") and Root Folder Name ("mysite") match.
    4. Hit "Next" Button
    5. Editing Files Select "No, I do not want to use a server technology."
    6. Hit "Next."
    7. Editing Files, Part 3 - Root Folder Location.  There are two stepf in this dialog box:
      1. Keep the Default - "Edit Local Copies on my machine..."
      2. Check to see that the Root Folder name matches the name of the file you uploaded in Step 1 to C:\\...MyDocuments.
      3. Browse to see where your root folder is located if you are unsure - click on the Yellow Folder icon.
    8. Sharing Files - FTP
      1. If you do not have a host site on a server, select "none."
      2. If you have a host site on a server, select FTP
      3. Enter information in the following three lines in the FTP dialog box:
        1. Host Name - Example - web4students.montgomerycollege.edu
        2. Folder - leave blank ("Automatic detect.")
        3. FTP Login - Enter UserID - Example - cmp0573678030
        4. Password - Enter Password provided
        5. Hit the "Test Connecton" button.  If you entered all information properly, Dreamweaver will open a connection to your web server site;  otherwise, you will get an error message.
      4. If you successfully tested your connection, click "Next."
    9. Site Definition.  Review your site definition.  If OK, click "Done."
  3. Creating and Editing Documents in a Dreamweaver Site.
    1. Create and edit all Dreamweaver documents in C:\\...MyDocuments\mysite
    2. This permits proper linking and file management for when you upload the site to the server.
    3. Dreamweaver's site manager will apply its powerful "site management" features to the site.
    4. The Site files and sub-folders will be shown in the Files panel (Window > Files);
    5. You should create sub-folders for various assets and subjects in your site:
      1. css folder - for all style sheets - mystyles.css;
      2. images folder - for all images.  See also Assets Panel;
      3. Subject sub-folders;
      4. All folders should be "small caps," no spaces between words;
  4. Creating a "Back-up:"  Saving to an external disk
    1. After you have finished editing your site, save all documents - File > Save All
    2. Keep a list of files you have edited during the day.  This will help you determine which files have changed when you upload to your server site using FTP.
    3. Open Windows Explorer - the Windows File Manager Software - Start > Right Click > Explore, or "Flag Key" + "E"
    4. Select root folder in C:\\...MyDocuments\mysite.
    5. Edit > Copy or Edit > Copy to Folder
    6. Select External drive
    7. Paste Root folder mysite into External disk - Edit > Paste.
    8. Make sure you have saved all documents to an external drive before shutting down. Montgomery College's Deep Freeze program will delete your files when you shut down and return the computer image to the originally installed image.  You will lose all files if you do not first save them to an external drive.
    9. Shut down your machine.  Start > Shut Down.
