I asked my Fall ’11 MA097 students to write three personal goals for this class.

Below are all responses, unedited.

Grades

·       My ultimate goal is to get an A in the class.

·       Get an “A”

·       My goal is to get an A for this course.

·       I have to get an A at the end of the class

·       I really want an A so my transcript will show redemption for my failure.

·       I want to get an A or B in this class.

·       My main goal for this class is to pass with at least a B.  I will strive for an A.  I have been out of school so long that I find it overwhelming and challenging, but I am up for the challenge.  I want to do well and I will do what it takes to do just that!

·       To get a B or higher on final exam and final grade.

·       Another goal is that I want to maintain at least a “B” in this class, if not an “A”.

·       Pass the class with an A or a B.

·       Maintain at least a B average grade in the course.

·       Earn at least a B in the class (hopefully)

·       I hope to pass this course with no lower than a “C”

·       Pass this class

·       Pass, finally

Understanding

·       I personally plan to gain a better understanding of math as a whole through algebra.

·       To learn and retain as much of this class as I can so that I can sail through my next math course.

·       My other goal for this class is to retain what I learn so that I may continue to do well in all my future classes that require math.

·       Learn and understand quadratic and exponential functions.

·       I would like to become better at using graphs.

·       One of my goals for this class is to actually understand the material because in high school I didn’t and I barely passed my math classes.  This year I actually want to understand what is going on.

·       To have a good understanding of the material.

·       Have a better understanding of math

·       I hope to gain a better understanding about algebra

·       I would like to find a tolerance for math; I do not like math.

·       Actually learn how to perform problems correctly.

·       More confident in algebra

Questions

·       Ask as many questions as I can in order to succeed.

·       I also plan to ask more questions and make sure I understand what is being taught.

·       If there is parts I do not understand I will ask as many questions I need to get what I did not before.

·       Get help from you or the math center if I need.

Attendance

·       I plan to attend each and every session so I do not fall behind in class.

·       Come to class EVERY DAY.

·       I never want to miss a class because math is my worst subject.  This is also why I chose this class for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  It is my only class that meets three times a week.

·       Go to class everyday, if I do miss a class make sure I get the work done right away.

Homework

·       Finish all homework on time and complete as possible

·       My biggest goal is to complete 100% of my homework, I’ve been know to procrastinate.

·       Do all the homework assignments.

·       Get all work done.

·       My weekly goal is to never have to rush and do homework the morning of our class which it is due.

Study Skills

·       To listen better even though I have a past of spacing out in math subjects because I don’t find math enjoyable

·       Not sleep in class.

·       I need to stay focused and on task

·       Drop my procrastination habit

·       Stay caught up on all assignments, such as H.W., notes, studying and quizzes; always knowing & staying aware of what’s going on in class.

·       A weekly mastering of the algebra content presented to me.

·       Do better on test taking

·       Study harder for math

·       Study all my recent work for all test.

·       Study as much as possible for tests and quizzes

·       Memorize equation formulas

·       I hope I can remember all the equation formulas!

·       My third goal is to challenge myself to do all extra work.

·       I’d like to be more efficient and quicker at doing simple equations so I can move on to the tougher problems at a better pace.

Organization

·       I want to be well organized in this math class.

·       Keep all my papers & homework together, neat and organized so I can refer to it throughout the course.

Real World Application

·       I want to be able to use math in the real world

·       I would like to find practical ways to apply the algebra in the long term.  For everyday scenarios.

·       Be able to help my kids with their math when they need it.

·       Math is something that can help me with any of my financial issues down the road.  Therefore, it is a goal of mine to learn to love it.

·       To be able to correct a math problem when a person doesn’t respond with the right answer that is essential to the question

·       Another goal of mine is to become a Registered Nurse.  This class will aide me in getting into the classes I need in the LPN program here at Montgomery College.  I am looking forward to scratching my brain and have the remnants of Algebra reappear.  I’ve been out of school for a while.  I did, however, take Algebra, Trigonometry & Geometry in high school.  I graduated awhile ago.  So, you know I need a refresher course! ·       Helping myself and others understand math in a fun easy way.
