The Monday Minute with Dr. Williams

Monday Minute

May 6, 2024

Final exam week has arrived! MC’s faculty and staff believe in you and your potential to marshal your talents and learning to end the semester with achievement. The Libraries are open for studynew window and virtual tutoring servicesnew window are among resources students can access. A Mobile Market on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus this Wednesday is among other supports available as well.

Achievement, Exams, and Commencement on the Horizon

Many of you are finishing exams and preparing for commencement at the same time. I hope you are as excited as I am. We have more than 3,000 degrees and certificates to be awarded this year. More than 1,500 students have registered to participate in the ceremony on May 17.

I was thrilled to celebrate with six MC students who were nominated to the All-Maryland Academic Team. Congratulations to team members, Susan Boroskin, Dickinson Carvajal, Donyell Harris Jr., Fikir Negesse Mantegaftot, Nikitta Joan Varghese, and Maulika Masson. Ms. Masson, who was also chosen as the 2024 New Century Transfer Pathway scholar, delivered eloquent remarks at last week’s statewide Phi Theta Kappa dinner celebration.

Generous Community Support for MC

The Montgomery College Alumni Association’s annual fundraising event, “Dogfishing for MC Scholarships,” last week raised more than $8,000 to support scholarships for MC students from about 450 community members. The Dogfish Head Alehouse restaurant generously donated 15% of its sales for the day towards the cause. Speaking of community support, a well-beloved, retired MC faculty member, Charles Holland, made an extraordinary gift to the College. Professor Holland passed away last month, after teaching at MC for 30 years. He left his entire retirement savings, valued at almost a half million dollars, to the College. His message was, “Someone helped me along the way, so I feel that I should help others. I want to ensure that others have access to these same opportunities.” What a testament to the loyalty that faculty and staff feel for our students and our mission.

Gracious Faculty and Staff

I am so appreciative of the faculty and staff who are working so hard to prepare for commencement. Several events last week showcased the careful planning that goes into each celebration of student success at the College. The ACES graduation was filled with families and proud students ready to take their next steps. The three honors convocations last week celebrated students who have achieved extraordinary success and it was evident how MC’s faculty and staff are invested in our students.
