Assessment of Prior Learning
IT’S UNIQUE!
The Portfolio Assessment option is perhaps Montgomery College’s most unique process for evaluating and awarding credit for prior learning. In art, for example, a student with experience in drawing and painting submits a portfolio of his or her work for faculty review for art credit. The same process of building a portfolio can occur to receive credit in other courses because your portfolio summary describes the learning you have acquired in a specific course area.
To understand which courses might be covered by the Portfolio Assessment option, contact counselor Barbara Gleason, barbara.gleason@montgomerycollege.eduor 240-567-5135.
IS PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT FOR YOU?
The Portfolio Assessment option is best suited to persons with at least one of the following qualities:
* a significant amount of learning in one area (you would submit one portfolio)
* a broad range of learning across a number of different areas (you would submit several portfolios)
* prior learning but a dislike of testing options.
DO YOU HAVE WRITING SKILLS AND TIME?
Please note that the Portfolio Assessment option has some unique requirements.
1. You must have adequate writing skills. Completion of EN101 or the equivalent is a prerequisite.
2. You must allow sufficient time to prepare your portfolio.
Your equal commitment to both the portfolio process and the outcome of having a portfolio is necessary.
COURSE REQUIREMENT
The Portfolio Assessment option requires that students enroll in the 3-credit Student Development course titled Portfolio Development Seminar (DS150). The course teaches you how to construct a portfolio. It provides a chance to evaluate personal, educational and career directions. It also provides opportunities for self-evaluation that many students have cited as valuable new learning.
The Portfolio Development Seminar (DS150) is scheduled for fall.
INFO SESSION
Portfolio Assessment potential students must attend a mandatory information session before registering for the DS150 course. This required information session is constructed so that potential students can fully understand the process and philosophy of the Portfolio Assessment option and how it applies to their specific situation. After the information session, if you qualify for the Portfolio Assessment option, follow normal Montgomery College registration procedures to enroll in DS150.
When they are scheduled, you will see information sessions at the Montgomery College home page under Hot topics. You may also contact us ahead to let us know of your interest, so we can notify you of the upcoming information session schedule.
WILL PORTFOLIO CREDIT TRANSFER?
Are you considering the Portfolio Assessment option? Determine the portfolio assessment transfer policies of two- and four-year colleges in which you have an interest. Portfolio-earned credit might not transfer, and there may be specific limitations and maximums.
NOTE: At times, portfolio credit maximums are a percentage of the total credits required for graduation. As a result, receiving institution may accept portfolio credits from Montgomery College, and then permit you to earn additional portfolio credits at their (the receiving) institution.
HOW MUCH DOES PORTFOLIO COST?
For each portfolio you submit after you complete the DS150 course, there is an evaluation fee due in advance of actual faculty assessment. The fee is for each portfolio to be evaluated. The fee is 40% of the current in-county tuition rate. (NOTE: This is the same fee structure for the department credit-by-examination program – another Montgomery College assessment of prior learning option.)
