* ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR LEARNING *

Read our Guide

(how to achieve advanced standing at Montgomery College)

Assessment of Prior Learning is the process of gaining credit for non-classroom learning.
Examples are workplace experiences, training and life-learning experiences.
Degree seeking students at Montgomery College may be awarded credit for prior learning in the following ways in accordance with approved academic regulations of the College.   NOTE:  If you wish to have the Admissions Office officially evaluate your scores for credit on CLEP, DANTES, or high school Advanced Placement tests, please send official test scores to the Admissions Office on the campus you plan to attend.  Deadlines for guaranteed evaluation applicable to the semester you want to attend Montgomery College are:  Spring - 11/1 , Summer - 4/1 , Fall - 7/1

A.   High school Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Course plus examination.

B.   Portfolio assessment of prior experiential learning
Credit for prior learning can be obtained through presentation of a “portfolio” which documents your experiences and/or prior training.  Students learn to develop a portfolio through a required 3-credit course, Portfolio Development, DS 150.  Once students have taken the course, they can develop several portfolios.  Portfolios are evaluated for college credit by faculty in the relevant discipline.    For more information -- please contact Barbara Gleason, barbara.gleason@montgomerycollege.edu

C.   CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
Montgomery College accepts CLEP scores taken at other testing centers.  Here is the list of tests  currently accepted at Montgomery College.   CLEP is currently computerized.  Here is a link to the main College Board CLEP page where you will find a great deal of information including lists of testing sites.   When you are taking the test at another school, enter 5393 as our code in order to have scores sent to MC.  To contact CLEP, call 609-771-7865 or 1-800-257-9558.

D.   DANTES (Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support) Testing Program.
You can visit http://www.getcollegecredit.com/ for additional information.   Montgomery College accepts Dantes scores.  We do not administer the test at this time, although we are listed as a test center.  Watch for updates.

E.   Credit-by-Examination
Applies to courses identified in the catalog with "CE" after the course title.  Montgomery College faculty prepare and evaluate such examinations or designate CLEP tests to be used in place of internally prepared exams.  Contact the subject area department directly on any of the 3 campuses, or contact the main college phone number at 240-567-5000 to reach the department.
