Wingding   CATALOG DESCRIPTION Wingding

  An introductory course in the business and economic application of descriptive and inferential statistics. The meaning and role of statistics in business and economics, frequency distributions, graphical presentations, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability, discrete and continuous probability distributions, inferences pertaining to means and proportions, and regression and correlation, time series analysis, and decision theory will be discussed.

Wingding   COURSE PREREQUISITES Wingding

  A grade of C or better in MA 100, MA 101, or MA 103; appropriate score on mathematics assessment test, or consent of department. Assessment levels: EN 101/101A, RD 120.

Wingding   TEXTBOOK Wingding

  Our e-Text is STATSPORTAL for The Practice of Business Statistics (2nd Edition), by David Moore, George McCabe, et al., published by W. H. Freeman and Company, 2009.

All students are expected to purchase a software product called STATSPORTAL to be used as the e-textbook for this course. This purchase can be made online via credit card or by purchasing an access code from a bookstore or other vendor. Access codes are available at the Germantown Campus Bookstore.

A unique password is required for STATSPORTAL. Within STATSPORTAL, students will have access to the complete textbook, solutions to all homework questions, StatTutor presentations for various topics, technology manuals, unit quizzes, and other resources and information. You must purchase STATSPORTAL and register for this course in STATSPORTAL in order to take the unit quizzes which will comprise part of your final grade.

Wingding   ONLINE REQUIREMENTS Wingding

  For each unit of new material, you will be required to take an online quiz (usually multiple choice/fill in the blank) that pertains to the unit's material. These online quizzes are open-book, open-note, and there is no prescribed time limit. However, each quiz has its own specific due date.

Wingding   TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS Wingding

  You will need the following to participate online:

Expect to spend several hours online each week.

A web browser such as Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer. For full details on compatible browsers and Browser Tune-up instructions, see http://www.webct.com/oriented.

This course requires that you have two "plug-ins" loaded on your machine. These are free software packages that allow you to read certain documents and/or view videos. The plug-ins we will use are Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player and Adobe Reader. For more information and downloads, go to:

Wingding   ON-CAMPUS REQUIREMENTS Wingding

  You must take a two hour midterm test for this course and a two hour Final Examination for this course.

These examinations must be taken at a Montgomery College Assessment Center at the Germantown, Rockville, or Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campuses.

  Although specific grade information will appear in the course syllabus, the online quizzes will comprise 20-30% of your grade. The midterm test and final exam will comprise the remaining 70-80%.
