CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Introduces the structure and function of human body systems. Topics include basic chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, organ systems (e.g. digestive, circulatory, reproductive systems) and associated common diseases and illnesses. This course is not for majors in biology of allied health. (NSND) Assessment levels: EN 101/101A, MA 100/101/103, RD 120. Three semester hours.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
There are no course prerequisites. However, students must meet the assessment level requirements by being minimally eligible to register for EN 101/101A and RD 120.
TEXTBOOK
Structure and Function of the Human Body, First Edition by Martini/Bartholomew.
Structure and Function of the Human Body provides a general overview of the structures of the body and the functions they play. The text is written to provide a very basic understanding of anatomy and physiology for non-science majors and will help you master terminology and understand concepts.
ONLINE REQUIREMENTS
A typical week for you will include some of the following: on-line discussions, assigned readings, and short open-book online quizzes. Additionally, there is a additional research and writing assignment due during the semester.
Your course grade will be based on the following:
Introductory Post: 2 Total Points
Exams: 198 Total Points
There will be two exams, a midterm and a non-comprehensive final. Each is worth 99 points. These exams will be open book.
Module Quizzes: 280 Total Points
There are 14 learning modules. Each module has an associated 20 pt quiz. After completing the module, you will take the quiz. The quiz will be timed and the format of the quiz will be multiple choice and/or short answer.
Body Ailment Assignment: 20 Total Points
You will be asked to provide a written paper related to a body ailment. The specific topic must be approved by the instructor ahead of time. Your paper should be no more than two pages in length but completely answer the questions outlined in the assignment.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
Technological ability to access Internet, Microsoft Word, and/or Adobe Acrobat documents and to create documents in either Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format.
ON-CAMPUS REQUIREMENTS
