CATALOG DESCRIPTION
An introductory noncalculus statistics course to serve a variety of students who need a working knowledge of statistics. Descriptive analysis and treatment of data, probability and probability distributions, statistical inferences, linear regression and correlations, chi-square, and some nonparametric statistics. Preexisting statistical computer programs may be used for some applications.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
A grade of C or better in MA 100, MA 101, MA 103, or MA 115A; appropriate score on mathematics assessment test, or consent of department. Assessment levels: EN 101/101A, RD 120.
TEXTBOOK
Our e-Text is called STATSPORTAL for The Basic Practice of Statistics (5th Edition), by David Moore, published by W. H. Freeman and Company, 2009.
All students are expected to purchase a software product called STATSPORTAL to be used as the e-textbook for this course. This purchase can be made online via credit card or by purchasing an access code from a bookstore or other vendor. Access codes are available at the Germantown Campus Bookstore.
A unique password is required for STATSPORTAL. Within STATSPORTAL, students will have access to the complete textbook, solutions to homework questions, StatTutor presentations for various topics, technology manuals, unit quizzes, and other resources and information. You must purchase STATSPORTAL and register for this course in STATSPORTAL in order to take the unit quizzes which will comprise part of your final grade.
ONLINE REQUIREMENTS
For each unit of new material, you will be required to take an online quiz (usually multiple choice/fill in the blank) that pertains to the unit's material. These online quizzes are open-book, open-note, and there is no prescribed time limit. However, each quiz has its own due date.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
You will need the following to participate online:

This course requires that you have two "plug-ins" loaded on your machine. These are free software packages that allow you to read certain documents and/or view videos. The plug-ins we will use are Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player and Adobe Reader. For more information and downloads, go to:
You must take a two hour midterm test for this course and a two hour Final Examination for this course.
These examinations must be taken at a Montgomery College Assessment Center at the Germantown, Rockville, or Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campuses. Dates for the tests will be specified in the course syllabus when it is available.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Although specific grade information will appear in the course syllabus, the online quizzes will comprise 20-30% of your grade. The midterm test and final exam will comprise the remaining 70-80%.
