Welcome to MS101 - Orientations to Diagnostic Medical Sonography,
Congratulations! You have just been selected to join the Class of 2011 of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program of Montgomery College at the Takoma Park – Silver Spring Campus. From a pool of so many applicants with very high GPA, you were determined to be the ones qualified to embark in a rigorous training and, once successful, join the company of the best sonographers in the Nation’s Capital Region.
This blended online course is the beginning of your sonography training where you will learn, among other topics, the beginnings of ultrasound, the variety of careers in this field, how to protect oneself from diseases, how to transport patients with different health issues, and other patient care aspects of the profession. This course will require you to attend the lab sessions once a week for the duration of the course. I hope you will enjoy your next eight weeks this summer as we explore together the past, the present, and the future of the ultrasound profession.
FACULTY INFORMATION
I graduated from the MCDMS program in 1996 and worked as a sonographer before joining the DMS faculty. After teaching part time for a while, I decided to teach full time in 2003. Since the late 90's, I have been coordinating the clinical aspect of the student's training in sonography at this college. I hold credentials in Abdominal and OB/GYN Sonography.
CATALOG DESCRIPTION
An orientation to the field of diagnostic medical sonography followed by techniques for assisting and monitoring patients. Professional ethics, legal issues, and patient care procedures pertinent to sonography will be covered. Chart reading and record keeping relative to ultrasound will be presented.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or consent of program coordinator; CPR certification - class C. Assessment levels: MA 110, RD 120. Laboratory experience required on and off campus.

ONLINE REQUIREMENTS
This online course consists of 8 learning modules that correspond to the summer weeks. Each module requires students to participate in weekly online lectures, discussions, assignments, and other activities on and off campus.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
You will need the following to participate online:
Expect to spend at least six hours online each week. Ideally, you should expect to login at least four times a week, even if some logins only involve checking for announcements, mail, or new postings.

Tune-up instructions allow you to make sure that your computer can handle all of the WebCT files.
ON-CAMPUS REQUIREMENTS
The midterm and final exams are held on-campus in HS 429 at specified times outside lab days. Labs meet every week during the summer and are held on-campus in HS 426. Lab coats are required for all lab activities. No open toed shoes, slip-on, or step-in permitted in the lab.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All clinical documentation of health requirements and required paperwork need to be submitted on or before the start of the session. There will be Online meetings conducted at specified time to be announced in class.
