This 5-day intensive program titled "Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement" is designed for campus leadership teams working on ways to increase student engagement, inclusion, and high achievement. The 2008 Learning College Summit will serve as a working retreat for college teams or individuals to connect with colleagues, share experiences, discuss issues, and explore strategies for overcoming obstacles and meeting challenges. This gathering of educators is designed to foster networking and collaborative opportunities, and is a vehicle to investigate ways colleges have successfully undertaken significant organizational transformation to improve student learning. With a rich diversity of perspectives, the conference is designed to be both personally enjoyable and professionally enriching. There is a general consensus that narrow learning is not enough to prepare college graduates appropriately for the increasing complexity of our diverse democracy and global society. Emerging research on student success has turned a spotlight on education practices that raise the level of persistence and achievement for today's college-going population. "Engaged learning practices" – such as learning communities, first year seminars, undergraduate research, infusing society's big questions into the curriculum, and connecting knowledge with choices and actions – have educational benefits for all students. At "Discovering, Integrating and Applying Knowledge: Effective Educational Practices for Today's Students and Tomorrow's Innovation," conference participants will explore the emerging research on practices that raise student achievement, and take a hard look at the institutional barriers that make it difficult to establish and sustain these practices. |

A "Make It Happen!" Innovation Grant. This workshop will help instructors increase student participation and learning in their developmental math classes. Various methods that promote student involvement and foster deeper learning will be explored. Examples will be provided of their use in Prealgebra, Elementary Algebra, and Intermediate Algebra courses. Workshop participants will engage in learning activities as they investigate converting traditional lessons and worksheets into more powerful active learning experiences. This year's conference will include special meeting times for peer round-table discussions. Please submit a proposal to present through our Website. Proposals will be accepted until February 1. We encourage 45 minute presentations. We are hopeful that many of you will seriously consider organizing panel presentations in the 45 minute slot that will allow for audience interaction with the experts. Not only have we found that these types of sessions are most popular with the audience but also require less formal work in presentation as well as a greater degree of participation.
