Strategic Objective

 To challenge and support students to become intentional learners through service-learning experiences in both discipline-related and out-of-class learning activities
Strategies
  1. Structure
    A college-wide structure will be maintained, managed by a coordinator for Service-Learning, to assist students, faculty, and staff in the identification, selection, and maintenance of service-learning sites, in the placement and monitoring of students, and in the recognition of their contribution to community-defined problems. Offices of Volunteerism and Service-Learning within the Student Life Offices at each campus with AmeriCorps members and/or staff assistance will serve students, faculty, staff, and community.
  2. Training
    Students, faculty, and advisers will be trained in service-learning and offered an opportunity to participate in service-learning experiences.
  3. Portfolio
    A student portfolio will be implemented to: capture student learning; relate the learning to the student’s educational plan; and provide direction for transfer, scholarship opportunities, and employment.
Projected Outcomes
  1. Students in service-learning classes and participating in out-of-class service-learning opportunities will:
    1. Address, inform, or expand their understanding of (a) learning objective(s).
    2. Have a deeper appreciation for and understanding of their discipline.
    3. Explore areas of personal development to enhance self-concept and define areas for personal improvement.
    4. Develop the ability to reflect, to think critically, and to explore personal values and expectations.
    5. Explore public policy issues in to increase understanding and to address social change and community improvement.
  2. Community needs as defined by community agencies or groups of citizens will be addressed by direct service of college students.
