The Student Leadership Summit was Montgomery College's first attempt to bring together campus-based student leaders from all three campuses to present the Learning College initiatives and gather feedback on student needs. The students who attended are our leaders from Honors programs, including Phi Theta Kappa, Student Senates, various clubs and groups, and our college newspapers. They reflected our college population in terms of ethnic, gender, and age diversity. The Summit began with lunch (good start to any meeting!), then brief introductions by Jim Daniels, Dean of Student Development (R) and Clarice Somersall, Vice President for Academic Initiatives & Partnerships (R). Then the fun began with a team-oriented exercise. The Directors of Student Life, Jim Walters (TP/SS), Debi Higbie-Holmes (G), and Helen Brewer (R), presented the students with a challenge: to re-create a Lego man model through observation and memory. One member from each team was allowed to observe the completed model at a time and report back to their team with their ideas on how to emulate the model. Dr. Karen Roseberry, Dean of Student Development (G), the Directors of Student Life, Jennie Wells, Acting Dean of Student Development (TP/SS), and Monica Brown, Associate Dean of Student Development (R), spoke about the Learning College initiatives and drew the students into the process with an initiative-related exercise. The students then had a "Report Out", bringing up student-related issues. The students gave insightful feedback, and Tumpa Rahman wrote an article for the EVP online newsletter. Visit these pages for more on the Summit. All in all, it was an enlightening, exciting, and informative day for all who attended. | |
