President, Montgomery College

Dr. Brian K. Johnson Dr. Brian K. Johnson became the seventh President of Montgomery College on February 1, 2007, following a national search by the College’s Board of Trustees.

Dr. Johnson will lead a college that serves nearly 60,000 students a year, through both credit and noncredit programs, in more than 100 areas of study. Montgomery College has campuses in Germantown, Rockville, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring, plus workforce development/continuing education centers and off-site programs throughout Montgomery County, Maryland.

Prior to joining Montgomery College, Dr. Johnson served as the CEO of the Allegheny Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In this role, Dr. Johnson provided executive oversight and strategic leadership for the Allegheny Campus, which has an annual enrollment of 20,000 students. He also served as the senior vice president for student and community services for the entire CCAC system since 2004. Dr. Johnson provided leadership in student and community services for the CCAC system of four campuses and seven educational centers, totaling more than 62,000 students annually.

While at the Community College of Allegheny County, Dr. Johnson spearheaded and launched the College’s “Achieving the Dream” effort, a nationwide initiative to raise the bar of student achievement. The Community College of Allegheny County joined a group of 57 other colleges as part of this innovative effort. Prior to his promotion to CEO at Allegheny, Dr. Johnson served as vice president of the Allegheny Campus where he provided administrative and academic leadership.

Dr. Johnson previously served as vice president of student and community services at Mesa Community College, in Mesa, Arizona, part of the Maricopa Community College District. While progressively advancing from entry-level management positions to senior administration in the 1990's, Dr. Johnson expanded his background to include experience as a workforce educator, community college and university faculty member, community organizer, and campus CEO. During his tenure at Mesa Community College, he opened a second comprehensive campus which currently serves 4,000 students. He has experience working in single college environments where the budget was $70 million, multi-campus environments where the budget was $90 million, and a multi-college district where the budget was in excess of half a billion dollars. He has taught English as a Second Language and led and supervised Native American student programs.

Dr. Johnson earned his Ed.D. in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Arts in education in counseling/human relations from Northern Arizona University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Ottawa University. Additionally, Dr. Johnson has completed numerous executive leadership programs, including Harvard's Institute for the Management of Lifelong Learning, the Thomas Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership, the League for Innovation's Executive Leadership Institute, the American Association of Community College's Future Leaders Institute, and the Pennsylvania Educational Policy Fellowship Program.
