TARGETED ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

TAP Tuition Reimbursement Program: Non-Credit Courses

The TAP Program provides short-term Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) training services to legal refugees/asylees in the Montgomery and Prince George’s counties that are intended to lead to employment within a year. VESL classes emphasize the listening, speaking, reading, writing skills necessary for successful entry into the workforce or other vocational programs. Students learn career-specific terminology and develop the intercultural competence needed for successful interaction in American society.

TAP Tuition Reimbursement Program: Non-Credit Courses
  • All TR referrals begin with a counseling session at Lutheran Social Services (LSS)
  • Students must be made TAP eligible
  • Students must bring an LSS TAP referral to Refugee Training Center (RTC)
  • Make an appointment with Dr. Brenda Williams
  • Attend counseling session with Dr. Williams
  • Classes are provided Fall, Spring and Summer

    • Phlebotomy Technician
    • Apartment Maintenance Technician Certification
    • Child Care (90 hours)
    • Computer Applications, Computer Databases & Computer Networking
    • Project Management
    • ESOL Classes:
      • ESOL for Healthcare
      • ESOL for Building Trades
      • ESOL for Customer Service
  • Student’s tuition and fees paid for with TAP and students are responsible for their books and supplies
  • Students are responsible for their transportation to and from class
  • Students must sign a TR agreement about performance and attendance
  • Student must bring a certification of completion of the course

The TAP program is open to refugees and political asylees, parolees from Haiti and Cuba, and holders of Special Immigrant Visas (SIV's) and T-Visas residing in Prince George's and Montgomery counties only. Students must bring proof of refugee or asylee status. Caseworkers may register clients for classes by completing the online form, or by sending the client to the RTC main office located at Montgomery College, The Cafritz Arts Center, room 230, 930 King Street, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. Clients must be registered for classes in advance.
