The Military Community at MC Montgomery College has various programs to offer active duty service personnel, veterans, and their dependents:
Montgomery College recognizes and appreciates the contributions of our local community serving in the US Military. To that end, the College has flexible withdrawal procedures for students who have been activated or mobilized. Enrolled credit students who must withdraw because of being
called to active military duty or being transferred because of related
troop movements are provided a 100% refund of tuition and fees, upon
presentation of a signed, written appeal and copy of military orders
for the semester within which the effective date of withdrawal falls.
This documentation should be turned in to the Campus Registrar or the
VA Coordinator.
Montgomery College’s programs of study have been approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission [MHEC] for veterans education benefits. The College has one VA Coordinator that is located on the Rockville Campus. Did you know that Congress just passed a new
GI Bill to increase educational benefits for Post 9/11 Veterans?
The changes are scheduled to begin August 1, 2009.
IT WILL TAKE THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AT LEAST EIGHT WEEKS TO PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION. If you are a new student at Montgomery College, you must first apply for admission, take the required placement tests, register for classes, then email the VA Coordinator to schedule an appointment. Previous
College Credit Office of Admissions and Records Office of Admissions and Records Office of Admissions and Records It is your responsibility to ensure that all transcripts are received and evaluated; you will receive a copy of the evaluation in the mail. It is your responsibility to ensure that prior training is not repeated. When in doubt, do not pursue the course until an evaluation has been completed. You will be certified for one semester only in a “pending” status; future certification will not be done until an evaluation has been completed. PLEASE NOTE: MC is a member of Service members Opportunity Colleges [SOC]. SOC is established to help Active Duty personnel in the Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard and their dependents graduate College. SOC is advantageous for students who intend to graduate from MC but anticipate a change of duty station before graduation, as the SOC agreement allows for credits to transfer back to MC for degree completion. Likewise, MC’s courses are recognized by SOC, so student who plan to graduate or transfer to another college or university also benefit from SOC agreements established at other schools. Students interested in initiating a SOC agreement with MC should submit the Request to Initiate a SOC Agreement to the Office of Admissions and Records on your campus. Responsibilities of Veterans Receiving Educational Benefits If you are a returning student, submit a Certification Request for VA Benefits form to the VA Coordinator every semester you enroll at MC to have your courses submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits. Any changes in your enrollment must be reported to the VA Coordinator immediately to avoid payment problems. At the end of each month, you must verify your MC enrollment with the Department of Veterans Affairs. by phone at 1-877-823-2378 or through WAVE. If you make a change to your student record, including a major/curriculum change, registration add/drop, address change, etc.), you must notify the VA Coordinator to avoid interruption of your benefits. Veterans under the Vocational Rehabilitation program (Chapter 31) must see a VA Counselor at the Regional Office in Washington, DC prior to registration to get approval for classes. Vouchers for tuition and books cannot be issued until the VA Coordinator has received the VA form 28-1905 from your Counselor.
Active duty personnel and students taking less than 6 credits will be paid only for the tuition and fees. Students who withdraw from courses which alter their benefits after the College’s official Add/Drop period, will be charged by the Veterans Administration with an overpayment dating from the first day of classes unless there is a “legitimate reason”. The Veterans Administration considers a legitimate reason to be: illness, a new job, altered work hours, transfer to a new locality, etc. Involuntary withdrawals due to reasons listed should be done in the Office of Admissions and Records; bring supporting documentation. It is your responsibility to notify the VA Coordinator of your withdrawal from classes. There is a special policy for students who are activated or mobilized. Developmental courses, also referred to as “remedial” or “review” courses, will be paid for if they are prerequisites to courses or are required by Montgomery College. Only those courses in which you received a grade of “F” may be repeated one time and paid for by the Veterans Administration. Any course in which you receive a grade of “D” or better will not be paid for since the Veterans Administration views this as a passing grade. Physical Education Courses and HE 100 The Veterans Administration will not pay for PE and HE100 because you will receive transfer credit for those classes from your DD-214 or DD-295. Audit and Independent Study Courses The Veterans Administration will not pay for courses pursued on an audit or independent study basis. Degree Seeking and Changes to Program of Study Students must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program to be eligible for benefits. You may only pursue the required classes for your particular degree or certificate as outlined in the College catalog. The Veterans Administration will allow one curriculum change per student academic career.
Combat to College [C2C] is a comprehensive program at the Rockville Campus to welcome home and provide academic opportunities and appropriate support services for Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and/or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). For a more comprehensive description of C2C, see: Combat2College: Facilitating College Success for Combat Veterans, by Joseph Bleiberg, PhD, et.al. The State of Maryland has a Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution. The award is 50% of MC’s annual tuition and fees. Please note: Maryland residents seeking Maryland State aid need to always submit a FAFSA by March 1. Even if the previous year’s tax return is not yet completed, students should still apply for financial aid using the latest tax return information available. When the correct return is available, students are required to correct their FAFSA. Another scholarship opportunity is available to Montgomery College students that are veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), through The Fund for Veterans Education. Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of financial need; length of military service (number of months and number of tours served) is also considered.
