Helpful Information for the Military Community at MC Montgomery College has various programs to offer active duty service personnel, veterans, and their dependents:
Montgomery College recognizes and appreciates the contributions of our local community serving in the US Military. To that end, the College has flexible withdrawal procedures for students who have been activated or mobilized. Enrolled credit students who must withdraw because of being
called to active military duty or being transferred because of related
troop movements are provided a 100% refund of tuition and fees, upon
presentation of a signed, written appeal and copy of military orders
for the semester within which the effective date of withdrawal falls.
This documentation should be turned in to the Campus Registrar or the
VA Coordinator.
Montgomery College programs of study have been approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission [MHEC] for veterans education benefits. The College has one VA Coordinator that is located on the Rockville Campus. Students interested in utilizing Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits, should visit the VA’s website for information about these benefits and eligibility requirements to request a Certificate of Eligibility for the Chapter 33 benefits by submitting an updated VA form 22-1990 to the VA. Students using the Post 9/11 GI bill must fill out Chapter 33 Promissory Note for Veterans Education Benefits and submit it to the VA Coordinator each semester. Veterans with Post 9/11 time in service
who are interested in transferring their education benefits entitlement
to their dependents will need to apply to the Department of Defense
to be approved for eligibility. For more information contact the VA
at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551). Chapter 33 benefits are contingent upon time in service after September 11, 2001. As your time in service increases, you will need to request an updated DD 214 from the VA to be eligible for an increase in benefits.
IT WILL TAKE THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AT LEAST EIGHT WEEKS TO PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION. If you are a new student at Montgomery College, you must first apply for admission, take the required placement tests, register for classes, and then email the VA Coordinator to schedule an appointment. Requesting
VA Benefits Each Semester Students must be in good academic standing. This means that you must successfully complete at least half of the courses in which you enroll and maintain a “C” average. To receive BAH, you must be enrolled in at least 7 credit hours with at least one class in-residence (on campus, not distance learning). Students who do not attend their courses and/or
do not drop before the refund deadlines will be responsible for repaying
the VA the total amount of benefits for the semester. Previous
College Credit Office of Admissions and Records Office of Admissions and Records Office of Admissions and Records It is your responsibility to ensure that all transcripts are received and evaluated; you will receive a copy of the evaluation in the mail. It is your responsibility to ensure that prior training is not repeated. When in doubt, do not pursue the course until an evaluation has been completed. You will be certified for one semester only in a “pending” status; future certification will not be done until an evaluation has been completed. PLEASE NOTE: MC is a member of Service members Opportunity Colleges [SOC]. SOC is established to help Active Duty personnel in the Army, Navy, Marines and their dependents graduate College. SOC is advantageous for students who intend to graduate from MC but anticipate a change of duty station before graduation, as the SOC agreement allows for credits to transfer back to MC for degree completion. Likewise, MC’s courses are recognized by SOC, so student who plan to graduate or transfer to another college or university also benefit from SOC agreements established at other schools. Students interested in initiating a SOC agreement with MC should submit the Request to Initiate a SOC Agreement to the Office of Admissions and Records on your campus. Students who withdraw from courses which alter their benefits after the College’s official Add/Drop period, will be charged by the Veterans Administration with an overpayment dating from the first day of classes unless there is a “legitimate reason”. The Veterans Administration considers a legitimate reason to be: illness, a new job, altered work hours, transfer to a new locality, etc. Involuntary withdrawals due to reasons listed should be done in the Office of Admissions and Records; bring supporting documentation. It is your responsibility to notify the VA Coordinator by email of your withdrawal from classes. There is a special policy for students who are activated or mobilized. Developmental courses, also referred to as “remedial” or “review” courses, will be paid for if they are prerequisites to courses or are required by Montgomery College. Only those courses in which you received a grade of “F” may be repeated one time and paid for by the Veterans Administration. Any course in which you receive a grade of “D” or better will not be paid for since the Veterans Administration views this as a passing grade. Distance
Learning Courses Physical Education Courses and HE 100 The Veterans Administration will not pay for PE and HE100 because you will receive transfer credit for those courses from your DD-214 or DD-295. Audit and Independent Study Courses The Veterans Administration will not pay for courses pursued on an audit or independent study basis. Degree Seeking and Changes to Program of Study Students must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program to be eligible for benefits. You may only pursue the required classes for your particular degree or certificate as outlined in the College catalog. Tutorial assistance may be paid to students under Chapters 30, 32, 33, 35, and 1606. Tutorial assistance helps the student pay for necessary tutoring and is a supplement to the student’s regular education benefit. The monthly rate may not exceed the cost of tutoring or $100. The maximum amount payable is $1200. The student, the tutor, and the VA Coordinator must complete VA Form 22-1990t. The application may be submitted at the end of each month or combination of months; the application must be signed and dated on or after the date of the last tutoring session certified. All of the following criterion must be met for a student to be eligible for tutorial assistance:
Combat to College [C2C] is a comprehensive program to welcome home and provide academic, social opportunities and appropriate support services to veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and/or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), all veterans, and active and reserve service members. The mission of C2C is to create a welcoming environment that assists veterans in transitioning and adapting the skill set developed from military training and combat experience to facilitate a successful college experience. For more information, visit C2C.
The State of Maryland has a Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution. The award is 50% of MC’s annual tuition and fees. Please note: Maryland residents seeking Maryland State aid need to always submit a FAFSA by March 1. Even if the previous year’s tax return is not yet completed, students should still apply for financial aid using the latest tax return information available. When the correct return is available, students are required to correct their FAFSA. Another scholarship opportunity is available to Montgomery
College students that are veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)
or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), through The
Fund for Veterans Education. Scholarship recipients are selected
primarily on the basis of financial need; length of military service
(number of months and number of tours served) is also considered.
