About the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)

What is the CTL?
The CTL, established in 1990, is Montgomery College's faculty professional development organization. It is both a physical location and a network of people devoted to faculty collegewide development at all three campuses. Its mission is to support the art of teaching by encouraging creativity, innovation, and continual improvement in instruction to enhance student learning. The CTL supports faculty using traditional and online course formats and provides a wide array of training and support for teaching initiatives and course enhancements.

Who are the Faculty Associates?
The CTL Associate program provides faculty members collegewide with a link to CTL services. Twelve associates are chosen each semester on the basis of their teaching ability and the skills (technical and other) that they can offer to their colleagues. Throughout the year, the associates run workshops, work individually with faculty members, and generally serve as a resource for faculty experimenting with classroom innovations. Since all associates are faculty members themselves, the connection between the skill they are teaching and its connection to the classroom is never lost.

What is the CTL Fellowship Program?
The CTL Fellowship program began in 1997 when five faculty members committed to work with the CTL on semester-long projects that would add a technical component to their instruction. In return, the CTL sponsored these faculty members with released time and technical support.

Since then, the Fellowship program has expanded in both size and scope. However, the focus is still the same: faculty projects center around making innovative changes to their instruction. The seeding of innovation and excitement continues as some Faculty Fellows return to the CTL as CTL Associates who will work with the CTL and other faculty.

Customized Workshops
The CTL works closely with academic administrators to meet the professional development needs of their faculty. If you are interested in a customized workshop or other professional development experience, please contact the CTL by e-mail or by dialing 240-567-5157.

Can part-time faculty participate in CTL activities?
Part-time faculty are welcome at all CTL workshops. Certificates of attendance at the workshops provide a record to the part-time faculty member to be used in salary advancement (part-time faculty should consult with their department chair for particulars of the salary advancement process).

At the beginning of each semester, an orientation to teaching at the college is conducted by CTL staff.

Each spring, a Fellowship Program is offered to part-time faculty members who have been nominated by their chairs. The Program offers an in-depth look at teaching which combines an online course titled "Teaching 101: The Fundamentals of Teaching" and four Saturdays where Fellows engage in microteaching and teaching issues are discussed.

Individual assistance in both instruction and the use of technological resources is also available for part-time faculty members.
