MS. ROBERTA F. SHULMAN (1999-2011)
Chair, Board of Trustees

Ms. Shulman was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees effective July 1, 2007, and served as the First Vice Chair from 2005 - 2007. She was appointed to the Board in 1999 for a six-year term and reappointed to a second six-year term in 2005.  Ms. Shulman is a consultant and executive coach with Shulman Associates. She holds a B.A. in communications from American University and an M.G.A. in management/marketing from the University of Maryland School of Management & Technology, and a certificate in leadership coaching from Georgetown University.  Ms. Shulman resides in Potomac.

 

MS. ROBERTA F. SHULMAN

DR. MICHAEL C. LIN (2000-2012)

First Vice Chair, Board of Trustees

Dr. Lin was elected First Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2007.  He was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2000 for a six-year term and reappointed to a second six-year term effective July 1, 2006. He is the executive director of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA).  Dr. Lin has been an OCA member for over 25 years.  As the OCA national president from 1995-1998, he spearheaded a national voter registration campaign, convened the historic Asian Pacific American Leadership Summits, and expanded OCA's education initiatives.  As the past OCA National Center campaign chair, Dr. Lin was instrumental in providing guidance and direction for the organization's capital campaign, and has continued to be involved with its architectural design, construction, and renovation, tapping into his twenty-plus years of experience as the managing partner for a hotel in the metro area.  Dr. Lin has retired after 30 years at the National Institutes of Health where his last position was a program director responsible for nurturing and funding cutting edge research in the cardiovascular field. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Medical College of Georgia and resides in Potomac.
 

DR. MICHAEL C. LIN

MR. STEPHEN Z. KAUFMAN (2001-2013)
Second Vice Chair, Board of Trustees

Mr. Kaufman was elected as Second Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2007. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2001 for a six-year term and was reappointed to a second six-year term, effective July 1, 2007. He is a senior partner with the law firm of Linowes and Blocher in Bethesda.  He holds a juris doctorate degree from the University of Baltimore Law School and is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a bachelor of arts degree. Mr. Kaufman resides in Brookeville.

 

MR. STEPHEN Z. KAUFMAN
MS. GEORGETTE W. GODWIN (2006-2012)
Ms. Godwin was appointed to the Board of Trustees effective July 1, 2006 for a six-year term. Ms. Godwin is President and CEO of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. She has a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University, School of Government and Business Administration, and a bachelor’s of arts degree from Grinnell College. Ms. Godwin resides in Rockville.

 

DR. JONG-ON HAHM (2002-2014)
Dr. Hahm was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2002 for a six-year term and reappointed to a second six-year term in 2008. Dr. Hahm is a Research Professor with the Elizabeth J. Somers Women's Leadership Program at George Washington University. She holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and resides in Potomac.
 

DR. JONG-ON HAHM

MR. GENE W. COUNIHAN (1997-2009)

Mr. Counihan was Chair of the Board of Trustees for two years from 2003-2005.  He was appointed to the Board in 1997 for a six-year term, and reappointed to a second six-year term in 2003. He is retired from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) where he was the Maryland government relations officer advising WMATA Board and management on matters involving State and local government in Maryland. The Honorable Mr. Counihan is a former member of the Maryland General Assembly, House of Delegates. He holds a B.S. in education and mathematics from Frostburg State University and a master’s degree in administration and psychology from American University. Mr. Counihan resides in Montgomery Village.

 

MR. GENE W. COUNIHAN

DR. OWEN D. NICHOLS (1996-2011)
Dr. Nichols
was Chair of the Board of Trustees for two years from 2001-2003. Dr. Nichols joined the Board in 1996 to complete a partial term, reappointed in 1999 to his first six-year term, and was reappointed to a second six-year term in 2005.  He is a retired vice president of Howard University, Washington D.C. He received his B.S. from Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina; an M.S. in physical chemistry from Howard University; and a doctorate in education administration and supervision from Highland University, Maryville, Tennessee.  Dr. Nichols resides in Silver Spring.

 

DR. OWEN D. NICHOLS

DR. SYLVIA W. CROWDER (1998-2010)
Dr. Crowder served as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2005-2007, and served as the First
Vice Chair from 2003-2005. She was appointed to the Board in 1998 for a six-year term and reappointed to a second six-year term in 2004. She is the Branch Chief of the International Studies Team for the International Education Programs Services at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. She has a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, a master’s degree in French Linguistics from Georgetown University, and a doctorate in Higher and Adult Education from the University of Maryland, College Park.  Dr. Crowder resides in Silver Spring.

DR. SYLVIA W. CROWDER

MR. REGINALD FELTON (2007-2013)

Mr. Felton is the director of federal relations at the National School Boards Association (NSBA). He is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive legislative strategies and representing the interests of local school boards and NSBA at the federal level on a variety of critical issues affecting student achievement in public education. Prior to his affiliation with NSBA, Mr. Felton was a senior executive with the U.S. Department of the Navy. He has also served as mayor and commissioner of Highland Beach, Maryland, and as president of the Silver Spring Center Citizens Advisory Board, and president of the Silver Spring Armory Citizens Advisory Board. From 1994 to 2004, he served as an elected member of the Montgomery County, Maryland, Board of Education. Mr. Felton holds a B.A. degree in sociology from Howard University, and M.S. degree in urban studies from Tulane University. Mr. Felton resides in Washington, D.C.

 

  
MR. GABRIEL SPIRO (2008 - 2009)
Mr. Spiro has grown into a student leader at the College and in the community. His campus involvement includes the Debate Club, the First Year Experience Student Ambassadors and the Student Disciplinary Committee. In addition, he served on the Germantown Campus Student Senate in 2006 and 2007. Spiro has attended various leadership classes and conferences locally and regionally. He also received the Junior Fire Brigade of the Year award in 2004 from the Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department, where he volunteered until October 2007. Mr. Spiro resides in Montgomery Village.
 

DR. BRIAN K. JOHNSON
Secretary-Treasurer, Board of Trustees

President, Montgomery College

Dr. Johnson began his career in education at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, part of the Maricopa Community College District, serving in entry-level management positions to senior administrative positions. Prior to arriving at Montgomery College, Dr. Johnson served as CEO of the Allegheny Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In this role, Dr. Johnson provided executive oversight and strategic leadership for the Allegheny Campus and served as the senior vice president for student and community services for the entire CCAC system since 2004. He provided leadership in student and community services for the CCAC system of four campuses and seven educational centers, totaling more than 62,000 students annually. Dr. Johnson holds an Ed.D. in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, a Masters of Arts in education in counseling/human relations from Northern Arizona University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Ottawa University. Dr. Johnson resides in Rockville.
