English Language Skills
Which program is right for you?

Adult ESOL & Literacy-GED, 301-962-8950

ESOL, English for Speakers of Other Languages, helps students learn English for life, work, and community. Levels begin with basic literacy through advanced. Most classes are tuition free, except advanced. Students take a test to find the best class for them.

  • ESOL, English for Speakers of Other Languages, helps students learn English for life, work, and community.
  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) for those students who need basic skills in reading and math.
  • Pre-GED is for students who have stronger skills, but need more work in all of the content areas.
  • GED is for students who are ready to focus on the academic areas covered by the official state test.

English as a Second Language (ESL), 240-567-7262

Courses include reading, speaking, listening, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The ESL courses are for beginning to advanced adult English language learners. Learners must take an assessment test and speak with a placement counselor to learn their level and the best courses for their learning goals.

  • Pre-Academic Track: Courses are for adult English language learners who need to improve their reading, writing and grammar to study in a U.S. college or university. These courses also help adults to develop the English language skills needed for their work and career.
  • General Communication Track: Courses are for adult English language learners who wish to improve their speaking, listening and pronunciation.

The American English Language Program (AELP), 240-567-7407, credit classes

The AELP focuses on American English for academic purposes and includes courses on grammar/writing, reading, and listening/speaking. These AELP courses are higher in level than most courses in the other two English language programs described above. Following admission to the college, students take an assessment test to determine which level of classes are appropriate for them.
