According to the electronic edition of The Oxford English Dictionary, plagiarism is defined as "The action or practice of plagiarizing; the wrongful appropriation or purloining, and publication as one's own, of the ideas, or the expression of the ideas (literary, artistic, musical, mechanical, etc.) of another."

Basically, this means that, either intentionally or unintentionally, writers use others' words or ideas without giving credit.  Acts of plagiarism can range from buying or downloading papers wholesale from the Internet to paraphrasing someone else's words or ideas without giving credit.
