Steps to earn credit by exam

For “credit by exam,” the student must successfully complete the final exam(s).  (Note: Some courses may require more than one final exam.)

  • Depending on the student’s performance on the final exam(s), the student will receive a “Pass” or “Unsatisfactory” grade.
  • Details of the requirements for the exams should be discussed with the Instructor administering the exam before Step II below is accomplished.

Meet with the Instructor administering the exam and the Department Chair to review the exam procedure and sign the form.

Go to the Cashier’s Office and pay for the Credit By Exam course.  The cost will be about 40% of the tuition required for the in-county rate. The Cashier’s Office will stamp the Credit-by-Exam form.  The student can keep the receipt for their record.

Take the receipt to the course Instructor to schedule the exam. The Instructor will retain the stamped Credit-by-Exam form until the student completes the exam.

Upon completion of the exam, the form will be submitted to the Admissions and Records Office with a notification of the “Pass” (grade C or above) or “Unsatisfactory” (failed) grade.  Most transfer institutions do not Accept CE for credit; if you plan on transferring from Montgomery College, please check with the institution you wish to transfer to before completing this exam.

NOTE: If the student attempts Credit-By-Exam and fails, he/she must take the course at the standard fee.  There is only one attempt allowed for the Credit-By-Exam per course.  There are no make-ups.
