Our Faculty & Staff

Engaged Educators, Helpful Guides

All of our faculty—credit and noncredit, full-time and part-time, on campus and online—embrace the Montgomery College Mission to provide educational excellence in a flexible learning environment so that students can meet their goals.

We have more than 500 full-time instructional faculty, 945 part-time instructional faculty, and 240 Workforce Development and Continuing Education faculty. These instructors are dedicated to empowering our students with the knowledge they will need to lead successful lives. With a student-faculty ratio of 17:1, students don't just attend lectures—they can interact with and ask questions of their teachers both in person and online. As a result, students and faculty work together to customize a learning experience that meets the individual needs of each student.

Furthermore, Montgomery College's faculty are experts in their fields—40 percent of MC's full-time instructional faculty held doctoral degrees. The strength of MC's impressive faculty members is clear in the number of faculty with doctorates, industry credentials, and professional certifications. Their range of extensive workplace and professional experience, as well as their connection with our community and with employers, underscore how Montgomery College faculty are in a prime position to help students achieve their college and career goals.

Featured Professors

Numerous Montgomery College professors have been named Maryland Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The last five professors to receive this honor are Prof. Nevart Tahmazian (prof. of chemistry), Prof. KenYatta Rogers (prof. of theater), Dr. Greg Wahl (prof. of English), Prof. John Hamman (prof. of math), and Prof. Dawn Avery (prof. of music).

Faculty Awards

Staff of the Year Award

Each year the College recognizes staff who exemplify excellence and serve as role models to others through the annual Staff of the Year Awards. Staff members are nominated by their colleagues. This is an especially challenging endeavor as there is only one award recipient and so many nominees that are well-deserving of this recognition. Congratulations to our past recipients.

  • Arkar Kyaw-Win - 2018
  • Roberta Buckberg - 2017
  • Karla Nabors - 2016

Carnegie Award

In 2017, The Carnegie Corporation of New York named MC's President, Dr. DeRionne Pollard, as a recipient of its Academic Leadership Award. Dr. Pollard is only the second community college recipient of this award. The honor consists of $500,000 in support for each winner’s academic initiatives. Dr. Pollard has earmarked the Carnegie award funds to two landmark programs: the coaching program at the College, Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES), and the Montgomery College Foundation’s Innovation Fund.

What People are Saying
College is not just a place to learn theories and facts: It is where we learn to see the world in new ways, where we can find our passion for learning. It is a place of transformation, and my mission is to facilitate positive change in my students' lives.
