Statement From Montgomery College President on Fiscal Year 2023 Operating Budget Recommendations from County Executive

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich today announced his funding recommendations for Montgomery College’s FY23 operating budget. Mr. Elrich approved the College’s full request of $321.3 million, which includes $153.4 million in county support. His proposed budget supports the College’s request for an increase of $3.8 million to help pay for well-deserved compensation increases for our faculty and staff. The county executive’s proposal also includes $3.3 million in additional funding to support establishment of the College’s new East County Education Center which will address important educational needs in that region.

We are grateful for the approval of our entire budget request and for the county executive’s commitment to the county’s community college. This support will allow our employees to remain resilient and mission-focused, offering high quality postsecondary education at an affordable cost to our students. In that spirit, MC’s FY23 budget includes no tuition increases for the third year in a row. The College remains the most affordable higher education option for Montgomery County residents at about half the price of the University of Maryland, College Park.

Advancing our FY23 budget goals is made possible by the work the College has done to meet the educational needs of our students while managing our spending and focusing on the many operational challenges of the past two years. The dedication and excellence demonstrated by our faculty and staff have contributed immeasurably to our success.

The College’s proposed FY23 budget balances its commitments to our faculty and staff with the need for sustainable fiscal discipline, and our mission to provide affordable high-quality postsecondary education for our students. Over the next few weeks, the College’s Board of Trustees and I will seek the county council’s support for full funding of our requested operating funds. This work continues through mid-May, when the council takes final action on the county’s budget. I will keep you updated on new developments.

Thank you for your continued dedication to Montgomery College and our students!
