In celebration of International Dance Day tomorrow, April 29, Montgomery College invites dancers of all backgrounds and experience levels to explore the College’s dynamic dance program. With classes offered at both the Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses, Montgomery College provides a welcoming space for students to develop their skills, express themselves, and grow through movement.
Montgomery College’s dance program offers a diverse array of technique classes—including ballet, modern, and jazz—as well as theory courses such as Introduction to Dance. Students benefit from professional-grade performance spaces, including the state-of-the-art Cultural Arts Center and the Parilla Performing Arts Center, and have multiple opportunities to showcase their talents throughout the year in student productions and musical theater performances.
“Dance at MC welcomes anyone interested in dance: those who danced in high school in dance companies, studios, or school dance teams, former professional dancers interested in returning to the field, or those who are curious about trying dance technique for the first time,” said Alice Howes, dance coordinator at MC. “The MC Dance Company presents two concerts a year that include several genres of dance, including modern dance, ballet, and hip-hop. Guest artists choreograph international dances for the MC Dance Company. Past guest artist works have included dances of West Africa, Brazil, China, India, and Ukraine.”
Students interested in pursuing a professional career or a four-year degree in dance, theatre, or other performing arts can begin their journey with the College’s Associate of Arts Degree in Performing Arts, where dance courses form a key part of a comprehensive, well-rounded education.
