R.A.P.T.O.R. Faculty Professional Development Recognition

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) recognizes the time and effort it takes for faculty to participate in professional development as well as lead and apply their learning to support students. The R.A.P.T.O.R. Professional Development Recognition initiative is designed to acknowledge those efforts that go beyond participation in professional development and encourage reflection, sharing, leadership, and application that impacts student learning.

Faculty can submit evidence of one or more of the following areas of professional development efforts using CTL Professional Development Recognition Form new window (will be available soon).

Infographic titled “R.A.P.T.O.R. Faculty Professional Development Recognition” showing six recognition categories: Reflector—connect learning across a themed group of sessions; Academic Collaborator—bring a new practice or perspective into a course with a peer or service area; Practitioner—apply a CTL strategy and share results; Trailblazer—lead or co-facilitate a new workshop or series with CTL; Optimizer—apply and share learning from professional development outside MC; and Raptor Legacy Achiever—document long-term contributions to professional development at MC.

  1. Reflector – For the Reflector achievement, applicants complete a group of professional development sessions within a theme. The group of sessions can be within a series (e.g., a learning community or Academy for Teaching Transformation series) or three or more individual workshops that address a theme. To earn the achievement, applicants should identify the theme, list the workshops or series completed, and write a detailed reflection explaining how the ideas from the different sessions tie together.
  2. Academic Collaborator – For the Academic Collaborator achievement, applicants work with a peer from a different discipline or department to integrate a new practice, perspective, and/or subject matter into their course. Some examples of Academic Collaboration can be:
    • Planning a lesson with input from someone from a different discipline to integrate concepts or perspectives from that discipline
    • Cross-collaborating with an academic service (libraries, service learning, career services, learning centers) on a project or lesson in new or innovative way (beyond making presentations about the service to students)
    • Coordinating a pop-up learning community (a one-time activity, lesson, or event) with a faculty member from another discipline whose course meets at the same time
  1. Practitioner – For the Practitioner achievement, applicants explain how they applied a concept or strategy from a CTL session to their course and submit the results, which can include student feedback, impact data, etc.
  2. Trailblazer – For the Trailblazer achievement, applicants lead or co-facilitate with a member of the CTL team on a new workshop or series. The workshop or series can be offered college-wide or within a specific department.
  3. OptimizerFor the Optimizer achievement, applicants attend a professional development opportunity outside of MC and share it with the college to impact an existing practice. Applicants must identify the strategy, explain how the strategy was implemented at MC, and document how implementation impacts practice.
  4. Raptor Legacy Achiever – For the Raptor Legacy Achiever, applicants make long-term contributions to the professional development program at MC. Applicants can be nominated or apply directly for this recognition by documenting multiple examples of leading, innovating, collaborating with others to support professional development at the College over time (minimum two years).

How will these efforts be acknowledged? Faculty who submit materials for one or more of the achievements may be recognized at a CTL celebration at the end of the academic year, and their submissions will be considered for inclusion on CTL’s website (The Hub) or newsletter (LEARN).
