Winners of the 1st Annual Business Ethics Competition
Congratulations Winners of the 1st Annual Business Ethics Competition!

1st Annual MC Business Ethics Competition:
Three Different Cases: Live Presentations

The 1st Annual Business Ethics Competition launched in Fall 2023 as part of Montgomery College’s experiential learning initiative. The competition provided MC students interested in ethical issues related to business with the opportunity to explore such issues and show strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

About the Competition

The competition took place at MC’s Ignite Hubnew window, an innovative space designed to inspire and support student learning activities.

The competition was hosted by Dr. Jeffrey Hillard of the Business, Economics, Accounting, Computer Applications, and Hospitality Management Department (BEACAHM) on the Rockville Campus. Dr. Hillard is a member of the Accounting faculty and has worked and published in the area of business ethics, with a focus on positive business ethics. Dr. Hoa Nguyen, Chair of BEACAHM, welcomed the event participants and guests.

Four student teams presented at the event. In preparation for their presentations, they selected a case and analyzed the case scenarios and ethical issues facing the organizations. The teams then formulated suggestions on how the organizations could address the ethical issues facing their companies through the lenses of reputation, reducing costs, relationships, and risk management (often referred to as the 4-Rs).

Of the teams participating the following received awards:

  • 1st Place: Team P: Jocelyn Cranefield, Jean-Gregorire Bernard, Rebecca Mines, and Ian Welch
  • 2nd Place: Team B: Monica Escalante, Kayla Diaz, and Jury Medrano
  • 3rd Place: Team N: Carlos Del Rio, Shayaan Paracha, and Julian Gracia Maruri

MC faculty, including  Dr. Angel Salinas-Gonzalez, Professor Richard H. Melnick, and Dr. Kathryn Klose, served as judges for the competition and after a robust round of questions to the teams and careful deliberation over scored rubrics, they selected the winning teams.

Members of the winning teams received awards that can be used during their studies at MC.
