College Closing

If Montgomery College is closed:

  • All classes are cancelled.
  • All College offices are closed. Non-essential employees are not authorized to be on the campus due to safety concerns.
  • All non-instructional facilities use will be cancelled during those hours that the College or campus is closed, except that the Rockville Campus Theater Arts Building, Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center 500-seat theater and/or the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Cultural Arts Center 500-seat theater may remain open. If no public announcement about Montgomery College closing is heard, the College is open regular hours.
  • If the College is closed, unless further announcement of continued closing is made, operations will resume on schedule the following day.
The 50 Percent Rule
If there is a delayed opening or early closing of the College occurring during the regularly scheduled meeting time of a class, the affected class will still meet if the class can meet for 50 percent or more of its regularly scheduled meeting time, or if the class can meet for 50 minutes or more.

College Delay

If Montgomery College has a delayed opening:

  • Classes and activities that begin on or after the opening time will operate as scheduled.
  • If a delayed opening of the College occurs during the regularly scheduled meeting time of a class, the affected class will still meet if the class can meet for 50 percent or more of its regularly scheduled meeting time, or if the class can meet for 50 minutes or more. For classes that will meet, class will begin at the time of the delayed opening and conclude at its regular time. Example: if the College opens at 10:00 a.m. and the class usually runs from 9:30-10:45 a.m., the class will still be held, but start at 10:00 a.m. If the College opens at 10:00 a.m. and the class usually runs from 9:00-10:45 a.m., the class will be cancelled.
  • All facilities and buildings (including parking lots and parking garages) will be open for general occupancy 30 minutes prior to the opening time. Example: If the College opens at 10 a.m., campus facilities and buildings will be unlocked and available at 9:30 a.m. on that day.
  • Unless otherwise notified, employees located at off-campus MC sites such as Corporate Boulevard, Standish Place, WDCE regional centers, and Community Engagement Centers should report to work at the delayed opening start time.

College Early Closing

If Montgomery College has an early closing:

  • If an early closing of the College is scheduled to occur during the regularly scheduled meeting time of a class, the affected class will still meet up to the time of closing, if the class can meet for 50 percent or more of its regularly scheduled meeting time, or if the class can meet for 50 minutes or more. Example: If the College closes at 3:00 p.m., classes that usually run from 2:10-3:45 will meet from 2:10-3:00 p.m. Classes that usually meet from 2:15-3:50 will be cancelled.
  • All non-instructional facilities use will be cancelled during those hours that the College or campus is closed, except that the Rockville Campus Theater Arts Building, Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center 500-seat theater and/or the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Cultural Arts Center 500-seat theater may remain open
  • Unless otherwise notified, employees located at off-campus MC sites such as Corporate Boulevard, Standish Place, WDCE regional centers, and Community Engagement Centers should leave work at the early closing time.

Shuttle Schedule During Delays and Closings

The MC Shuttle will resume regular schedule within a half hour prior to a delayed opening and run an hour past an early closing to assure all our faculty, staff, and students can return to their destinations on days with weather related hours. A 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. delayed opening schedule is posted on the parking and transportation section of the website.

MCPS Closings and Dual Enrollment Classes

Please remember that the College and MCPS make independent decisions on weather closings based on each institution’s criteria. Just because MCPS closes does not necessarily mean that Montgomery College will close.

Dually enrolled high school students taking classes on campus or online follow the college’s regular closure and delay procedures regardless of the MCPS schedule.

For dual enrollment classes offered at a high school site or USG, please refer to the following:

Who Is Authorized to Be on Campus During Closings and Delays?

When the College is officially closed or the opening of the College is delayed, non-essential employees are not authorized to be on the campus due to safety concerns. Only essential personnel are permitted on College campuses during periods of closure. Essential personnel is defined as: (1) Personnel required to ensure campus buildings and grounds are operational and secure; and (2) Personnel required for monitoring and communicating the operational status of the College. This restriction is in place for the protection of our students and employees. If the College is closed, it is deemed not safe for other than essential personnel. Essential personnel, including our public safety officers, are involved in operational needs to get the campuses open and safe. They are unable to provide full attention to the safety and security of students and employees during these times.

For additional details about closings and delays, please view MC’s policies and procedures about closings and delays.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact MC Public Safety or 240-567-4292.
