Why It Matters

A strong safety culture goes beyond policies and procedures. It reflects shared values, attitudes, and behaviors that prioritize health and safety throughout Montgomery College. The award recognizes and reinforces the proactive actions, open communication, leadership, and continuous improvement that help protect employees, students, and visitors.

We Recognize Excellence in Four Areas

Developing or implementing innovative safety practices, improving existing programs or processes, or contributing sustainable and proactive safety solutions.
Leading by example, promoting open communication and a positive safety culture, identifying hazards, and taking action to minimize risks.
Consistently demonstrating high safety standards, helping prevent injuries, accidents, or illnesses, producing measurable improvements, or proactively exceeding normal role expectations.
Contributing to safety training, education, awareness, mentoring, coaching, service beyond regular responsibilities, or advocacy for health and safety across the College.

Who Can Be Nominated?

  • The nominee must be a current Montgomery College employee with at least one year of service.
  • An employee may receive no more than one Safety Culture Award per fiscal year.
  • Any Montgomery College employee may nominate another eligible employee.
  • Self-nominations are not permitted.
  • Nominations may be submitted across departments, roles, and campuses.

What You Need to Submit

  • Completed Nomination Form. 
  • One letter of support form a colleague, supervisor, or stakeholder
  • Optional additional supporting materials. 

Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. 

Types of Safety Contributions

Nominations may recognize contributions involving Laboratory Safety, Classroom Safety, Workplace Safety, Student Safety, or another significant health or safety initiative. 

How to Write a Strong Nomination

The strongest nominations clearly explain what the nominee accomplished and connect those actions to a meaningful safety improvement. 

1. Describe the Need
Explain the safety problem, hazard, opportunity, or area for improvement. 
2. Explain the Action
Describe what the nominee did and how the effort strengthened or went beyond normal practices.
3. Show the Impact
Describe the outcomes such as reduced incidents, improved processes, increased awareness, reduced risk, or other measurable or observable improvements. 

Nomination Details 

The nomination form allows nominators to identify either an individual or a team. For a team nomination, enter one team member in the nominee field and list the remaining team members in the space provided.

Explain what the nominee did, why it was important, how the actions strengthened normal safety practices, and the resulting impact on employees, students, operations, or the College's safety culture. Specific examples are stronger than general statements.

One letter of support from a colleague, supervisor, or stakeholder is required. Additional supporting materials are optional.

The Safety Culture Award Selection Committee reviews nominations using established criteria and evaluates the quality and impact of the nominee's contributions. The process is intended to be fair, consistent, and unbiased. Contributions are evaluated on their merits rather than department size, funding level, or previous safety findings.
