Technology Metro Area Pathways (TechMAP)
TechMAP Background Information
The TechMAP Grant Program is funded by the Employment and Training (ETA), U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Strengthening Community College’s (SCC2) Training Grant. The purpose of the grant-funded program is to support underrepresented students to overcome barriers to education that lead to high-quality IT jobs. Participants will work closely with a Career Navigator, who will help students understand career options and enroll in the best program of study for them and connect them to wrap around services within the College and in the community.
Tech Foundations
In this two-day bootcamp, TechMAP, a U.S. DOL. grant-funded program, and MC Information
Technology Institute, will offer FREE introductory lessons for aspiring tech professionals
to gain skills for high-demand IT positions. Our aim is to introduce students to some
of the skills they might find themselves applying daily in the exciting world of technology.
At the end of the bootcamp, you will have the opportunity to work with a Career Navigator
to select and register for one of the following career pathways of your choice. Tech
Foundations is intended for participants who do not have technical experience in the
field of IT but who are interested in gaining skills for high-demand IT jobs.
Tech Pathways
In this three-hour session, participants will learn about high-demand career pathways
in the field of IT. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to work
with a Career Navigator to select and register for one of the following career pathways
of your choice. Tech Pathways is intended for participants who have some experience
in the field of IT through training or work experience, or students who have a technical
background and are interested in upskilling and/or obtaining IT industry certifications.

TechMAP services are cost-free and are offered on a first come, first-served basis. Please note that submitting the bootcamp application form does not mean automatic acceptance into the bootcamp program. Eligible applicants will be contacted via email with further instructions.

TechMAP Student Resource Guide
- Applicants must be a current resident of the national capital region (geographic area located within the boundaries of (A) the District of Columbia, (B) Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in the State of Maryland, (C) Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria in the Commonwealth of Virginia).
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of application submission.
- Applications are open to all eligible participants, including dislocated workers, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, older youth, historically marginalized or underrepresented populations and communities–including people of color, women, individuals with disabilities, those previously incarcerated, veterans, and military spouses.
This program is for applicants who are interested in pursuing a career in information technology (IT) but have faced barriers in obtaining education that leads to jobs in IT.
Applicants must:

a. If you meet the preliminary eligibility requirements, you will be instructed to provide one document for each of these categories. At least one document needs to be a photo ID.

TechMAP participants will receive instruction and/or referrals to services that focus on resume writing, interviewing, job placement, and other workforce resources.
You can take courses in career pathways offered by the Information Technology Institute (ITI), part of Workforce Development and Continuing Education at Montgomery College. These courses will lead to an IT-industry credential or certification that will help you get employed. Approved programs of study include the following.
- Cloud Technologies
- Cybersecurity
- Data Analysis
Some classes are held remotely while others meet face-to-face. Check the schedule to confirm your class meeting time and location.
Face-to-face classes may be held at any of the following locations: Germantown, Rockville, Takoma Park/Silver Spring, and Gaithersburg Business Training Center. Check the schedule to confirm your class meeting time and location.
Once you submit a screening eligibility form, allow 3-4 weeks for your submission to be reviewed. All applicants will receive a response by email. Eligible students will receive an official invitation by email with further instructions.
The total cost of the Montgomery College TechMAP program is $2,109,091. 75.86% ($1,600,000) is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment & Training Administration’s Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grant Program. 24.14% ($509,091) is funded through non-federal leveraged resources by Montgomery College and its partners.
